The saddest thing on this list is seeing just how much Husker Du--an excellent band that defined "college rock" for a good chunk of the 1980s--has pretty much vanished from the public consciousness.

Last weekend spent a lot of time discussing whether the production of certain popular 90s grunge acts held up. The conversation wandered off into a discussion of essentially who was more influential now, from that era. I said I'd pull the Spotify monthly listener numbers to see which ones people still listen to. And here they are.

Also threw in my own two bands and some peer bands and random shit (like Creed) for comparison. Cracker has held up pretty good over the years, with our listener count more than doubling since covid. We do get lots of soundtracks but not really sure why that has happened. We also have some historic soundtracks (like Clueless) that support our numbers. And we did have 4 solid MTV hits. Camper Van Beethoven meanwhile is dwindling having lost 25% over the last 6 years.

Wanted to point out how popularity back in the day doesn't always translate to what people listen to now.

Beth is a wonderful advocate for wildlife and nature in Southern California so I feel bad that she's having a tough time physically...yet also incredibly jealous that she stumbled upon an original artwork by Lee van Cleef!

Silver lining story today: I have been struggling with chronic pain in my neck and shoulder from overwork, and sometimes it goes acute-like today (surgery may be in my future). Had to pull over on my drive in Kettleman City, and admit I could not make it to Safari West for my talk tonight-I was very disappointed to let them down and miss my annual talk there.

Feeling sad, I went into Bravo Farms to use the restroom, stretch my legs, and see about some ice. I stumbled upon this painting in their antique section. I loved the art itself, but was surprised and delighted when I saw the artist’s name: Lee Van Cleef. I had no idea he was an artist, but a quick google confirmed. What a find! Lee Van Cleef starred in so many iconic films like The Good, the Bad and the Ugly and Escape from New York. And now I have a lovely bluebird painting on my wall from one of the great movie villains. A disappointing day made a little less disappointing.

Unfortunately Husker Du broke up before they could have an R.E.M.-like mainstream breakthrough, and they've never been a movie or television needle drop mainstay like The Pixies (who also pioneered the loud-quiet-loud thing that Nirvana later made so famous.)

There's a line in the Dead Milkmen's joke song "The Thing That Only Eats Hippies" that goes "Now it's got a sweet tooth for long hair/so Bob and Greg and Grant you should beware" and it was just assumed that the audience would know it was a gentle poke at Husker Du.
