Freddie Mercury and Brian May onstage with Queen at Live Aid, Wembley Stadium, London, on July 13, 1985, Freddie on a white Telecaster for "Crazy Little Thing Called Love." Live Aid was organised by Bob Geldof and Midge Ure to raise money for the famine in Ethiopia, following the success of the charity single "Do They Know It's Christmas?" in December 1984. It ran simultaneously at Wembley and at JFK Stadium in Philadelphia, with around 72,000 people at Wembley and an estimated 1.9 billion watching the broadcast in 150 nations. Queen's 21 minute set began at 6:41 pm. They opened with an excerpt of "Bohemian Rhapsody," moved into "Radio Ga Ga" with the whole stadium clapping in time, then played "Hammer to Fall," "Crazy Little Thing Called Love," a short "We Will Rock You" and "We Are the Champions." Later in the evening Freddie and Brian came back out to perform "Is This the World We Created...?" from The Works. In 2005 the set was voted the best rock gig of all time, and it became the climax of the 2018 film Bohemian Rhapsody. 👑 Queen's set at Live Aid was voted the best rock gig of all time in 2005. Did you watch Live Aid live on TV that day? 👑

In 1979, while relaxing in the bathtub at the luxurious Bayerischer Hof hotel in Munich, Freddie Mercury felt a sudden spark of inspiration. In just ten minutes, wrapped in a towel, Queen’s legendary lead singer composed the basic structure of “Crazy Little Thing Called Love” using an acoustic guitar that he had quickly brought to his room. The song was conceived as a loving tribute to the rockabilly style and the classic sound of Elvis Presley, characterized by a striking melodic simplicity. Mercury, who admitted he was not an expert guitarist, used his limitations with the instrument to create a catchy, straightforward rhythm that fit perfectly with the carefree energy of early rock and roll. Released as a single, the song became a massive worldwide hit, reaching number one on the U.S. charts and establishing itself as one of the most enduring classics in Queen’s catalog.

In 1985, hours before taking the stage at Wembley for Live Aid, doctors warned Freddie Mercury not to sing. He had serious vocal problems and even refused to give interviews that morning because of the condition of his throat. Far from heeding their advice, he decided to go on stage with Queen anyway. The result was a set lasting just 21 minutes that went on to become legendary. Freddie got 72,000 people in the stadium to sing and clap in unison, following his every move, in a display of stage presence that many consider unmatched. Two decades later, in 2005, a BBC poll voted that performance the greatest live show in Rock History, ranking it above Jimi Hendrix at Woodstock and even The Rolling Stones’ free concert in Hyde Park.

Freddie Mercury in his black and white harlequin catsuit, the look he wore on stage throughout 1977. The diamond unitard was reportedly inspired by the Harlequin costume from the 1910 ballet Carnaval, danced by Vaslav Nijinsky. "I'm into this ballet thing," Freddie told NME in June 1977, "and trying to put across our music in a more artistic manner than before." He wore it across Europe and North America that year, from the A Day at the Races tour to News of the World. One of his harlequin costumes sold at auction in 2012 for £22,500. 👑 Freddie said he was "into this ballet thing" in 1977. Did any rock frontman ever move on stage like him? 👑 👇️

Brian May revealed that Freddie Mercury told him, "I can't do this anymore," after Queen's final concert in 1986. On August 9, 1986, Queen took the stage at Knebworth Park to perform what would turn out to be their final concert with Freddie Mercury. Before a crowd estimated at between 160,000 and 200,000 people, no one knew that that night would mark the end of an era. After the concert, Brian May recalls that Freddie told him, “I can’t do this anymore.” At the time, they thought it was an exaggeration following an exhausting tour. Years later, May came to understand those words differently. Freddie likely already knew the severity of his illness. He had been diagnosed with HIV before telling his bandmates in 1989. Freddie continued to perform with extraordinary energy until his last public appearance. On November 23, 1991, he announced that he had AIDS. He died the next day, November 24, at his home in Kensington, at the age of 45. For Brian May, Roger Taylor and John Deacon, his death marked the breakup of a band they had always considered inseparable.

Yesterday, October 9, John Lennon would have turned 86. By a curious coincidence, his youngest son, Sean Ono Lennon, born in 1975 from his relationship with Yoko Ono, shares the exact same birthday as his father. Sean was born on the day John turned 35, a gift that Lennon himself described as the most special he had ever received.
