Kanafani's family was forced out of their home during the Nakba in 1948. His writings—Men in the Sun, and Return to Haifa—spoke to the ongoing trauma of Israeli occupation and ethnic cleansing.

Kanafani called for the right of return for all Palestinian refugees. This demand is more relevant now than ever.
