This is a long read, but it’s a story about kindness that I can’t ignore.
On 12th Jan 2025, I drove from Gulu to Moroto to resume work after spending a whole year in India. As I was approaching Matany (about 35km to my destination), I was stopped by the military police at the checkpoint. I hadn’t committed crime. They usually do that to request for free rides for people who are traveling to Moroto.
When he came to my car window, he pointed to two guys on my right who needed a lift but I declined, partly because I don’t feel safe giving lifts to guys (this is all in my head, don’t mind me 😊).
He didn’t give up. There was another girl on the left side of the road. “How about that one? Do you have another excuse?” He said that while smiling and pointing in the direction of a tired-looking teenager. “No problem. Let her come in,” I beckoned.
The car was silent for about 10 minutes, which is perfectly okay for an introvert like me. I particularly love driving alone for that one reason. However, for some unknown reason, I broke the silence.
I asked for her name, what she was doing at the stage before I came and what should like to become in future (this my favorite question to teenagers). It’s at this point that I learnt she was a total orphan living with her grandmother. Having dropped out of school in S.3 for the whole of 2024, she had walked 35km to come to Matany to request a certain nun to help her with tuition to resume school.
The said nun didn’t have any more slots for sponsorship. Frustrated and without hope, I guess, she was going to walk back another 35km home. After hearing her story, I felt speechless. I told her I would try working out something for her.
I reached out for help to one of you on this space who prefers anonymity. He not only sent tuition for her but money for requirements as well. I must confess that I haven’t met this person physically. But the kindness exhibited just blew my mind. He trusted a stranger like me with 1.5M shillings!
As I write now, the teenager has resumed school. She’ll be sitting S4 this year. I’m just writing this to say thank you to this person. Just know that you have impacted a life. You have restored hope. You have put a smile on someone’s face. That’s the spirit of UBUNTU ❤️❤️. I am because you are!
And to all of us on this space, I want you to know that social media is a good space. I have countless testimonies, but for now, let me go and see my patients. There’s one who almost gave me a sleepless night!
