“The controversy, therefore, is less about Sharjeel’s proposals than the anxieties they expose; a political imagination that can accommodate Muslims as vulnerable minorities requiring protection but remains deeply unsettled by their assertion as autonomous political subjects. The asymmetry is revealing; Dalit mobilisation through the Bahujan Samaj Party, regional autonomy through Dravidian politics and Hindu nationalist mobilisation demonstrate how collective identities can become the basis of organised political power, although each has encountered distinct forms of opposition. Why, then, are demands for Muslim political autonomy so readily interpreted through communalism, separatism and threats to national unity? The issue is not the legitimacy of criticism but the ideological assumptions that determine which political claims appear legitimate before their substance has been examined.”

And yet Modi will fly to another Arab country to inaugurate another grand temple and lecture the world on how happy Muslims are under his government. The irony is obscene.

27 Lakh Voters were deleted in West Bengal.

These were not 'dead people' or 'bangladeshis'. These were real people who had already appealed to get their votes restored. The Supreme court could’ve delayed the West Bengal elections until the tribunals finished hearing the appeals of these voters. But they didn’t. Only around 1607 voters were restored in time by phase 2 of these elections. Almost every appeal that was heard turned out to be a wrongful deletion.

In any functional democracy, this would not count as a free and fair election where a large section of voters have lost their voting rights. I'm not saying that TMC would've won for sure if they were added back, maybe BJP would still win, but the question is about the fairness of these elections.

Free and fair elections are a spectrum. Ever since Delhi-Maharashtra-Bihar-Bengal, this needle has moved more and more towards being unfair. Each time somehow the opposition parties participate as usual in the electoral process thinking that they can still pull of a win despite the compromised EC, ED, CBI etc. and each time they have been proven wrong after 2024 Lok Sabha. The question is, at what point will they feel that the level of unfairness is so unfair that elections should be boycotted?

I personally feel TMC should have refused to participate in these elections until all those 27 lakh appeals were finished being heard.

🚨 World Press Freedom Day: a testimony from Gaza journalist Fadi Al-Wahidi.

Shot on October 9, 2024 in Jabalia refugee camp while covering the war for Al Jazeera, he was clearly marked as press when he was struck in the neck by Israeli fire. The attack left him paralyzed.

Colleagues who were calling out to him were killed.

Despite a life-threatening spinal injury, his evacuation was delayed for months amid repeated denied transfer requests, until he was finally evacuated on February 10, 2025 to Cairo and then Qatar for treatment.

“There is no press freedom… my injury is the proof. But my voice is still here.”
