I am always so surprised that whenever you raise your voice on any decision related to wildlife, you receive many positive responses and also many negative ones, as expected. But the decision taken for those leopards, bears and tigers of Uttarakhand is not appropriate. It appears more like an attempt to protect the people of the state while also securing political advantage for themselves.
A better solution can be found for this. You already have a better option of relocating them, which can be carried out relatively easily. Even if these animals have entered human settlements and killed people or caused harm, killing them still appears to be a completely wrong and prejudiced decision.
Relocating the villages closest to the forests in the Garhwal region of Uttarakhand could be a far better measure. By killing them you will only create space for another animal to establish its territory there, and this process will keep continuing. The only real way to control excess population is to make the forests more secure and free from human interference.
Today in Madhya Pradesh alone, in the last six months, 10 people have lost their lives in tiger or leopard attacks at different places. So should those animals also be removed? The better approach, if we want to maintain coexistence with nature, is to first control human intervention in the forests. Identify all the places where human-wildlife conflict incidents have occurred, and with WII and other organisations, scientifically investigate the causes. Understand their movement and hunting patterns, and then make necessary improvements in a phased manner. This is strictly essential.
The pressure of a population of 1.20 crore people must be controlled, and the so-called infrastructure development being carried out in an unscientific manner in the name of development which is causing direct and indirect damage to forests must be stopped. Forest development should be encouraged instead.
These animals are not a problem; they are the property of the state. They should not be declared a burden on the state and a plan made to wipe them out. Creating awareness among people is also extremely necessary. The dependence of villagers on forests needs to be controlled, and extra focus must be given to backward and economically pressured districts and areas. Forest staff must carry out their patrolling properly.
Every life is extremely important whether it is that of a human being or of a carnivore or herbivore.
These animals carry out attacks only after coming out of some forest. Monitoring of those forests can be strengthened.
By killing them you may provide temporary safety to humans and gain votes, but this is by no means the proper solution to reach the root of the problem. You will find that the same problem will reappear after a certain period.

Is Uttarakhand’s Kill Order for 13 Leopards & 3 Bears Politically Motivated?
A secrecy report behind the order issued by the Chief Wildlife Warden of Uttarakhand directing the killing of 13 leopards and 3 bears, and the tranquilisation and capture of 16 tigers states that for a long time, neither the capture of tigers and leopards nor their deaths in conflict situations has led to any reduction in attacks on humans.
What surprises me most about this order is this: when the secret report itself shows no decline in human-wildlife conflict, what sudden necessity has arisen to kill these animals in their own habitat? Is this decision politically motivated? Is it being carried out as a misadventure simply to please a certain vote bank and secure it for political gains?
Issuing killing orders on such a mass scale is deeply disturbing for anyone who cares about wildlife.
The biggest question that needs serious thought is this: How exactly will the specific aggressive animals be identified? What if a leopard that has never been involved in any such incident still ends up becoming a victim? That would be a serious matter of concern.
It appears that swab samples are being stored after every human killing, and DNA matching will be done only after the animals are killed. This approach is completely wrong and unconstitutional.
The Chief Wildlife Warden must revoke these orders and adopt a better, more scientific solution. Otherwise, this will amount to one-sided arbitrariness.
I also appeal to the Hon’ble Chief Minister of Uttarakhand to issue clear directions for the cancellation of this order.
