A US billionaire is reportedly receiving up to 13,000 gallons of water a day by tanker truck to keep the grounds of his Wiltshire estate green – while residents in neighbouring villages are told to save water amid a record-breaking drought.

It is believed Stephen Schwarzman, CEO of asset management giant Blackstone, is using the water to irrigate newly planted trees at the 2,100-acre Conholt Park.

Neighbours told the Mail on Sunday that they had spotted the tanker trucks heading into the estate, noting that the lush grounds of the estate contrasted starkly with the bleached fields of the surrounding area.

Although the estate is not itself under a hosepipe ban, it is located in Wessex, which is one of seven areas across England where the Environment Agency has declared drought.

“Rivers are running low, farmers are having to harvest crops early, wildfire risk is increasing, and millions of people are living under restrictions on water use,” the Environment Department said last week.

Purchased for £82m in 2022, the estate has since undergone extensive renovations, with planning permission granted for the construction of an ornamental lake in 2024.

In September 2025, Southern Water stepped in and banned tanker companies from delivering water to the property after villagers complained the water was being used to fill up the lake.

Steve Kershaw, 68, who lives in nearby Tangley, told the Mail on Sunday: “This is causing uproar. The standing joke is that Lord Lake, as he's known round here, is at it again.”

A source close to Schwarzman told the Mail on Sunday the CEO “is ensuring that local water resources are not affected.” Another source said: “All water brought to the estate is supplied through licensed providers and sourced lawfully.”
