For many dairy farmers, a healthy herd is more than just livestock. It is their livelihood, their children’s school fees and the foundation of household income. But that livelihood is constantly threatened by East Coast Fever (ECF), one of the most fatal cattle diseases and a major cause of losses in the dairy sector.

In Uasin Gishu County, Kenya, it is estimated that about 54% of disease incidences in dairy cattle are linked to ECF. When outbreaks occur, farmers can lose animals, milk production drops and hard-earned investments are wiped out in a matter of days.

That’s why building resilience in the dairy value chain must start with prevention and ensuring farmers can afford it.

💡 Under the Climate-Smart Dairy Project, dairy farmers are being supported to vaccinate their cattle using a once-in-a-lifetime ECF vaccine made accessible through affordable financing. To ensure safe and effective delivery of the vaccination, the project trained over 50 veterinarians from Nandi, Elgeyo Marakwet, Trans Nzoia and Uasin Gishu counties on the proper administration of the vaccine. The practical training sessions were held on 9th December 2025 at Tuiyo Farmers Cooperative, one of the participating cooperatives under the project.

As part of the exercise, farmers at the cooperative also benefited from free vaccination for 30 animals, providing immediate protection while serving as a live demonstration of the vaccination process.

This initiative is being implemented by the @kenya_chamber (KNCCI) in partnership with AGF to strengthen the dairy value chain and expand access to financing, enabling farmers to sustain productivity and grow their incomes.

Through the Affirmative Finance Action for Women in Africa (AFAWA) initiative, the African Guarantee Fund (AGF) is committed to strengthening the capacity of Women owned Small and led Enterprises (WSMEs) by providing targeted training to boost productivity and growth, while also improving access to finance and fostering job creation.
