When the mud washes away, an elephant's sneaky sparkles appear. ⭐

As we’ve talked about several times, it’s very rainy these days at Elephant Sanctuary Brazil. In a video that we previously shared, you can see how intense the downpours can be (watch it here https://t.co/VpUNpRPXSA ). Yesterday, around dinner time, we had an absolutely torrential storm that was much like that one. Some of our newer caregivers hadn’t ever seen the elephants quite as clean as they get when they’re soaked.

Bambi’s trunk gets really sparkling when she’s in the pouring rain. Often when it rains, the elephants will cover themselves with mud, which is basically what we expect during these times. But yesterday, the elephants may have been caught off guard because most of them were spick and span. Bambi’s trunk is light colored and freckly, which you almost never see in the light of day. When mentioning this to Scott, he replied that when there’s a lot of rain, the elephants’ “stars come out,” meaning that you can really see all of their freckles when they’re clean.

Today started out clear and sunny, but when the caregivers showed up to offer Rana and Mara their breakfast, the majority of both of their skin looked really dark and wet with contrasting light spots and freckles. That told us that, before anyone arrived, they must have been spraying themselves with some clean water rather than mud.

This week’s Sunday Smile gives us a glimpse of Maia and Bambi in the back of Yard 5, where they’d just had breakfast. Afterward, they were enjoying their morning snack of hay and Bambi decided it would be best to toss hers around instead of eating it. She was very enthusiastic about it, sending large mouthfuls backward with enthusiasm.

Once they finished, the two of them fell asleep and Bambi started to snooze with her mouth hanging open. Maia stood next to her with a mouthful of hay and grass. After they napped for a while, Bambi woke up and backed away from the fence first. Maia’s eyes opened, she leaned forward and did a nice stretch with her back legs, and then she lifted her trunk and yawned really wide, at which point the food finally fell out of her mouth. Talk about messy eaters…
