Everyone is proud of Pakistan being chosen to facilitate talks. There is no need for either disappointment or over exuberance. There will hopefully be many rounds of talks before lasting peace, providing Isreal is contained.
On the other hand, what is with these delusions of sudden glory & projections of game changing rise that we suddenly start fantasising about? There are no short cuts or free meals. Its stability & reform within that leads towards gradual improvements. These improvements, if consistently followed through then start compounding and nations start beginning to see a change in their fates.
Gen Yayha was the main fulcrum for opening diplomatic channels of China for the US. Gen Zia was at the forefront of giving a fatal blow to Soviet Union in Afghanistan, at the behest of US. And Gen Musharraf became the darling of US after sep 11th. So Pakistan has had many opportunities but they were not capitalised into gains for our people.
Eventually, the lack of structural reform, the overstretch within & failure to address local fault lines & Pakistan achieved nothing. This geopolitical posturing (more a function of geography & security state capability) could neither perpetuate the rule of any regime nor bring any meaningful change for Pakistanis. The sooner we learn these lessons the better. A peace agreement may one day flow through Pakistan’s airspace, but our prosperity depends purely on the foundations we build within.
