The Department of Employment and Labour plans to impose a fine of up to R100,000 per worker on entities found to be employing illegal migrants. The department also plans to employ 10,000 labour inspectors to ensure compliance with the country's laws. Deputy Minister Jomo Sibiya says that only 2,300 are currently performing the task.

The Gauteng Department of Social Development has introduced a clause prohibiting non-profit organisations from using provincial funding to pay non-South African employees. Deputy Director-General Tebello Mkhonto says the department is simply implementing existing legislative requirements. She insists that the policy is not new.

A 49-year-old Zimbabwean national was arrested in the Moletlane policing area, Limpopo, after police intercepted a truck transporting illicit tobacco worth an estimated R1.5 million.
The operation was carried out by the Provincial Tracking Team, assisted by Tshimollo Security and Investigations, following intelligence about a white Nissan truck travelling from Zimbabwe to Gauteng.
The vehicle was stopped on the R518 road, where officers discovered 333 master boxes of Hookar tobacco.
Further investigations revealed that the suspect was in South Africa illegally.
Police seized the truck, valued at R800,000, along with the illicit tobacco, bringing the total value of the confiscated items to R2.3 million.
The suspect is expected to appear in the Zebediela Periodical Court on 8 June 2026 on charges relating to the Customs and Excise Act and the Immigration Act.

The Border Management Authority (BMA) successfully facilitated the departure of 933 Mozambican nationals through the Lebombo Port of Entry on 3 June 2026.
Of those processed, 349 came from the Lindela Holding Facility as part of the Department of Home Affairs’ deportation programme, while 584 travelled from Mossel Bay with assistance from the Mozambican High Commission.
All individuals underwent immigration checks, including identity verification and biometric screening.
Authorities also dealt with cases involving undocumented individuals, immigration status verification, and 17 people who had overstayed their visas.
The group included 38 minors, whose processing was overseen by the Department of Social Development.
A total of 926 people were successfully returned to Mozambique, while seven were not permitted to depart due to documentation, immigration status, nationality verification, or child protection concerns.
The operation was completed without incident and highlighted cooperation between South African and Mozambican authorities in managing lawful cross-border movement.

Police have arrested a foreign national and recovered over R440 000 in drugs and other items in an operation this evening.
The Nigerian man was found in Lamontville, allegedly with cocaine.
He is linked to drug dealing in that area, as well as Umlazi, Chatsworth and Umbilo.
After he was interrogated, he led the team - consisting of the SAPS Economic Infrastructure Task Team, Provincial Drug and Firearm Unit, SAPS eThekwini District and Excellerate K9 Unit - to his flat in Umbilo.
There, officers found crystal meth, drug manufacturing equipment and cash.
The suspect’s passport and vehicle were also confiscated.
He is due in court soon.

NEWS: A police Sergeant Naponel Lucas Macheke (42), from the Visible Policing Unit in Mokopane in Limpopo, has been sentenced to five years’ direct imprisonment for corruption.
This comes after, in August 2022, Macheke demanded a bribe of R2000 from an employer who was accused of assaulting his employee.
He said R1000 would go to the police and the rest to the assaulted employee, and the matter would then be closed - KZN Tonight Podcast
