If you are a foreign national from East Africa doing small business in Kenya, you are required to regularize your stay under the new law.

Go to the Kenya eFNS portal on eCitizen and apply for a Class R Permit.

This is the special permit for all East African Community nationals.

That includes Burundi, Rwanda, Uganda, Tanzania, DRC, South Sudan and Somalia.

The permit itself is FREE. The processing fee is Kshs 0 and the issuance fee is Kshs 0.

This was gazetted in the Kenya Citizenship and Immigration Amendment Regulations 2024 by Prime CS Musalia Mudavadi.

However, you will need to pay about Ksh 5,000 per year for Alien Registration which is the Foreign National ID.

For documents, you will need your valid passport, a cover letter explaining what you do, your KRA PIN if you are doing business, and a police clearance for small traders.

The application starts online but you must print the forms and submit them physically at Immigration offices at Nyayo House in Nairobi.

It is the legal way to live, work and trade in Kenya as an EAC citizen and your right is protected by the EAC free movement treaty.

Before Benga became a genre, there was a young man from Nyamagongo, near Shirati, in Tanzania’s Mara Region.

His name was Daniel Owino Misiani.

Born on 22 February 1940, Misiani grew up around Luo musical traditions. He sang in school and church choirs and later picked up percussion. His parents, deeply religious, did not approve of his desire to become a musician. His father even destroyed his first guitar.

It did not stop him.

Misiani travelled between Tanzania and Kenya, eventually settling in Nairobi in 1964. In 1965, he began recording with the Victoria Boys. The band evolved through several names before becoming Shirati Jazz.

And then something extraordinary happened.

Misiani took the rhythms of Luo traditional music, particularly the influence of the nyatiti and orutu, and fused them with electric guitar and other modern sounds.

Benga was born.

But Misiani was not merely interested in making people dance.

He made the guitar speak.

He sang about love, death, greed, poverty, morality, politicians, ordinary people and the politics of his time. His songs became an archive of East African society.

That is why Kenyans called him “The King of History.”

His music could entertain you and educate you in the same breath.

It could praise a man today and question a government tomorrow.

His political and social commentary sometimes brought him into conflict with the authorities, and he was arrested and imprisoned on several occasions over lyrics considered politically provocative.

Yet he kept playing.

Shirati Jazz became one of the most influential bands in East Africa, and Misiani became one of the defining figures of Kenyan popular music.

Internationally, he became known as “the grandfather of Benga.”

His music eventually travelled far beyond East Africa. In 1989, Piny Ose Mer brought his work to a wider international audience.

For decades, D.O. Misiani documented the world around him with a guitar.

He died in a road accident in Kisumu on 17 May 2006, aged 66.

But the man died.

The history did not.

Listen to Misiani today and you are not simply listening to old Luo music.

You are listening to Kenya remembering itself.
