Why Every Household Should Rear Some Animals and/or Birds 🐄🐐🐖🐇🐔🦃
A household does not need a large piece of land to benefit from livestock farming. Even on a small scale, keeping animals or birds can strengthen food security, household income and farm productivity.

🐔 Chickens can provide eggs and meat and can be sold when cash is needed.
🐇 Rabbits require relatively little space and can provide meat and breeding stock.
🐐 Goats can provide meat, milk and income while adapting well to many smallholder farming systems.
🐖 Pigs can turn feed into valuable meat and provide an important source of household income.
🐄 Cows can provide milk, manure and meat, while breeding animals can become valuable household assets.
🦃 Turkeys can provide meat and can diversify a household's poultry enterprise.

Animal manure can also be returned to the garden to improve soil fertility, helping connect livestock and crop production. Small livestock such as pigs, goats and chickens have been documented as important livelihood assets for smallholder farmers in Uganda.

The goal is not to keep every species. Start with an animal that matches your land, capital, feed resources, market and ability to provide proper care. Good housing, nutrition, hygiene and veterinary attention are essential.
👉 Do not just consume agricultural products—consider producing some of what your household needs. Start small, learn, grow and diversify.
