I am truly honored to be here today, among such extraordinary people who are shaping the future of our world.

I ask that we keep our eyes on East Africa. Our region is going through a difficult chapter — marked by abductions, a shrinking civic space, and leaders who refuse to let go of power or value the lives of their citizens.

In Tanzania today, the president has barred her opponents from running for office, and the country once known for its peace is now in turmoil. Across our borders, activists live in fear. Kenyans have been abducted in Uganda and Tanzania. Ugandans in Kenya and Tanzania. Tanzanians in Kenya. It is the worst kind of exchange program — one that trades away our dignity and freedom.

In Kenya, we are facing our own struggles under a president determined to consolidate power, pushing through laws that violate our right to free expression.

But even in these dark times, I stand here in hope. I dedicate this moment to all the young people across the world who continue to rise, speak out, and demand better from those who lead us. You remind us that courage is contagious, and that change, no matter how far, always begins with us.
