@mkainerugaba Legal Representation on corruption probes can face delays, political interference, enforcement gaps, making experienced counsel essential for balancing the scales. However this lawyer must adhere to ethical standards—facilitating corruption can lead to their own liability.
I wonder how the women’s movement in Uganda is processing the disgraceful fall of AAA, one of the most highly empowered women in our country. Even when many powerful Ugandan women deny my place in the broad movement, I position myself right within it. I am a Ugandan feminist thinker and activist, thinking with AAA’s ongoing fall from state power.
Does AAA belong to Uganda’s women’s movement? Are we distancing ourselves from her? Is she one of us? Are we condemning her leadership? Or are we allowing her to exemplify the complexities of organising women’s emancipation? Did we do enough to ensure that she worked for our liberation as Ugandan women? Did we support her enough to represent us? Does AAA stand for Ugandan women in any way? Does her fall reflect on us - feminists in Uganda? Isn’t her failure our failure too? Do we take any lessons today from AAA and all the women political leaders of her ilk?
We worked very hard for women to get access to political leadership and representation. AAA is among those who skyrockected to the very apex of the state. When she was Speaker of Parliament, did her leadership represent us? Did we eat with her? Did we counsel her when she stepped on Ugandans’ necks, defended oppressors of Ugandans and stole from us through corruption? Did we play a role in her down fall?
I don’t know!
What I know is that I joined the GenZ who organised the #AnitaMustResign protests! Perhaps if AAA had resigned when we told her, she would not have fallen as hard as she is falling today.
Fellow Ugandans, especially the Bazzukulu, greetings.
After consultations with the national epidemic response task force and religious leaders, we have decided to postpone the Martyrs' Day to a later date, which will be communicated.
This decision was made because Uganda receives thousands of pilgrims annually from Eastern Congo, which is currently experiencing an Ebola outbreak. To safeguard everyone's lives, it is essential that this important event be postponed.
I encourage those who had begun their journey to return home, continue observing the precautionary measures, report anyone who is sick, and encourage those who are ill to seek medical care.
We regret any inconvenience caused, but the protection of life must come first.
Signed:
Yoweri K. Museveni
