Recently, two Muslim sisters shared deeply painful experiences with me. In one case, a woman endured nearly two decades of her husband's repeated infidelity, repeatedly treating infections she contracted after marital relations with him. Financial dependence and concern for her daughters kept her in the marriage despite the emotional and physical toll. Eventually, it became evident that her husband was deeply involved in an illicit relationship with another woman. He later claimed he intended to marry her as a second wife, but by then he had already transmitted HSV to his wife through his continued infidelity.
In another case, a young wife has repeatedly contracted sexually transmitted infections from her cheating husband, who also refuses to use protection despite the obvious medical risks. These are not merely marital disputes; they are matters of life, health, trust, and human dignity.
Islam does not permit a spouse to endanger the life or health of the other. One of the higher objectives (Maqāṣid) of the Sharīʿah is the preservation of life and lineage. A husband who knowingly exposes his wife to sexually transmitted infections through adultery commits a grave sin and an act of oppression. A wife in such circumstances has every right to protect herself from further harm. If there is a credible risk of infection because of proven infidelity, she is justified in refusing sexual relations until genuine repentance has occurred, appropriate medical evaluation and treatment have been completed, and the danger has been removed. This is not disobedience; it is self-preservation, and the Sharīʿah does not require a person to submit to preventable harm.
There are important lessons here for our sisters, and indeed for our entire community:
1. Strive for financial independence through lawful work, skills, or business. While a husband is obligated to provide maintenance, having your own source of income can protect your dignity and expand your choices in difficult times.
2. Build lawful savings and assets. Islam recognises a woman's independent financial ownership. Do not surrender that right out of misplaced sentiment.
3. Never normalise or excuse infidelity. Adultery destroys trust, families, and health. It should be confronted with wisdom, accountability, and sincere repentance, not silence.
4. Do not remain in a harmful marriage solely because of societal pressure or fear of raising children alone. Children are better served by a safe and dignified environment than by witnessing persistent abuse and betrayal.
5. Value your life and your health. People's opinions will not bear your pain, pay your medical bills, or answer before Allah on your behalf. Your life is an amānah (trust) from Allah and deserves protection.
This advice is not an invitation to hastily dissolve marriages. Islam encourages reconciliation where there is sincere repentance, justice, and reform. But reconciliation cannot be built on persistent deception, repeated infidelity, and the continued exposure of an innocent spouse to serious harm. Marriage is founded upon tranquillity, mercy, fidelity, and mutual protection, not exploitation and abuse.
Zina starts with something so simple. A gaze, a smile, a text message, a meeting and before you know it, you're immersed in it. If you've committed Zina in the past, repent sincerely and resolve never to do it again, and Allâh is the Most Forgiving.
If you are committing Zina right now, stop; it is not too late. Allâh loves it when you repent, but the act needs to be stopped.
May Allâh protect us from this sin and forgive our sins. Join us to say Ameen.
When a husband is repeatedly found to be engaging in extramarital sexual relationships, the Sharīʿah recognizes the wife's right to protect herself from harm. She may refuse sexual intercourse and related intimate acts until there is clear evidence of sincere repentance, a complete cessation of the misconduct, and, where necessary, appropriate medical evaluation and treatment.
This position is consistent with the higher objectives of the Sharīʿah (Maqāṣid al-Sharīʿah), which seek to preserve life, faith, lineage, and human dignity. A spouse is not required to expose themselves to avoidable physical, emotional, or spiritual harm in the name of marital rights. Rather, marriage in Islam is built upon trust, fidelity, compassion, and mutual responsibility, and when these are seriously violated, the harmed spouse has legitimate rights to safeguard their well-being while genuine reform takes place.

It is important for every Muslim, and indeed every fair-minded person, to understand Islam's uncompromising position on terrorism and the sanctity of human life.
Terrorism has no legitimate place in Islam. The deliberate killing of innocent people, the spreading of fear among civilians, the destruction of places of worship, markets, schools, and communities are among the gravest of sins. Allah declares:
"Whoever kills a soul unless for a soul or for corruption [done] in the land, it is as though he has killed all mankind; and whoever saves one, it is as though he has saved all mankind." (Qur'ān 5:32).
Those who murder innocent people while claiming to act in the name of Islam do not honour the religion; they betray it. They distort the teachings of the Qur'ān and the Sunnah, defame the Prophet (ṣallāLlāhu 'alayhi wa sallam), and bring suffering upon Muslims and non-Muslims alike. Such acts fall under the category of spreading corruption (fasād) on earth, a crime for which the Qur'ān prescribes the severest legal punishments when established through due process under legitimate authority (Qur'ān 5:33). No individual or group has the right to appoint itself judge, jury, and executioner.
Muslims must therefore reject every ideology that justifies the murder of innocents, condemns entire communities without right, or seeks political objectives through terror. Justice, mercy, and the preservation of life are among the highest objectives of the Sharīʿah.
At the same time, we must acknowledge and appreciate the immense sacrifices made by our Armed Forces, the Police, and other security agencies in the fight against terrorism and violent crime. Day and night, many of these brave men and women leave their families behind, risk their lives in dangerous operations, and endure harsh conditions so that millions of citizens can live in peace and security. Many have been injured, while others have paid the ultimate price in the service of their nation.
While constructive criticism of institutions is sometimes necessary, it should never blind us to the courage, dedication, and sacrifice of those who faithfully discharge their duties. They deserve our respect, our support, and our sincere prayers.
May Allah protect our Armed Forces, Police, and all security personnel. May He grant them wisdom, strength, integrity, and success in defeating terrorism and criminality. May He comfort the families of those who have fallen in the line of duty, heal the wounded, expose and defeat those who spread violence and fear, and bless our nation with lasting peace, justice, and security. Every single day, I find myself overwhelmed by the ongoing genocide in Gaza, the criminals expanding into the Westbank and Lebanon, the continued global indifference towards Sudan, the refugees among us who arise from the causes we claim dear to us that get virtually zero community support, the forgotten political prisoners left to languish in dungeons like graves beneath the earth, and the painful feeling that I am still not doing enough for any of them.
May Allah relieve the oppressed, free the imprisoned, and forgive our shortcomings.
On my way back from Lagos today, I found myself seated beside a pastor and another Christian gentleman. Somehow, he noticed a post I was writing earlier in the day about the historical ties and shared heritage between Muslims and Christians. That observation sparked a lengthy conversation, one that he initiated.
As we spoke, I became increasingly concerned. It was evident that, despite being a church leader, much of his understanding of Islam, Muslims, and the security challenges facing Nigeria was shaped by misinformation rather than facts.
He sincerely believed that terrorism in Nigeria is primarily a Muslim campaign against Christians and that Christians are the sole or principal victims of terrorist violence. He also argued that allowing Muslim girls to wear the Hijāb in public schools is a form of intolerance. At several points, I found myself laughing—not because the issues were amusing, but because I was genuinely surprised by the depth of the misconceptions.
What worried me most was not his opinion as an individual but the implication of it. If a leader within the Church can hold such views, what then is being passed down to ordinary members who rely on such leaders for guidance?
I also noticed a troubling double standard. Violence committed by terrorists who merely claim a Muslim identity was readily described as "Islamic terrorism," while violence committed against Muslims was explained away as "reprisals." Such selective language obscures reality and prevents honest engagement with the problem.
Even more concerning was his reliance on anti-Islam websites, distorted quotations, and frequently misinterpreted Qur'ānic verses as primary sources for understanding Islam. No serious person would accept being defined by the propaganda of their opponents, yet many continue to form opinions about Islam from sources openly hostile to it.
I made one point very clear during our discussion: neither Muslims nor Christians can defeat terrorism alone. The enemies of peace do not ask their victims whether they are Muslim or Christian before unleashing destruction. The only sustainable path forward is cooperation, mutual understanding, and a united front against those who seek to divide us.
Whenever terrorists strike, two groups rejoice. The first are the terrorists themselves, whose goal is to spread fear, hatred, and chaos. The second are those who exploit such tragedies to fuel anti-Muslim propaganda, demonize an entire faith community, and deepen existing divisions. Both benefit from suspicion and hostility between Muslims and Christians.
If we continue to allow prejudice, misinformation, and mutual distrust to define our relationships, we will only be advancing the objectives of the terrorists. We will become enemies of one another while the real enemies sit back and watch with satisfaction.
Nigeria's future security depends not merely on military action but also on our willingness to reject propaganda, challenge misinformation, and build genuine solidarity across religious lines. Terrorism thrives where communities are divided. It weakens where they stand together.
