We've normalised #burnout.
We celebrate the promotion.
We applaud the 14-hour day.
We admire the "always available" leader.
Then we're shocked when people break.
Maybe burnout isn't the problem... β¬οΈ
#sapsHQ [YOUTH MONTH - SAPS YOUTH LEADING THE RESET AGENDA: MEET CONSTABLE CLEONE PETERSEN, A PUBLIC ORDER POLICING OPERATOR
As South Africa commemorates Youth Month, the #SAPS continues to celebrate the resilience, passion, and leadership of its young members through the national campaign, βSAPS Youth β Leading the Reset Agenda.β
Under the theme βMy Blood is Blue,β SAPS is showcasing the journeys of young police officers who embody integrity, discipline, and service, while contributing to safer communities and a stronger nation.
Today, SAPS introduces 27-year-old Constable Cleone Petersen who is attached to the Public Order Policing (POP) Unit in Potchefstroom, North West province.
Petersen joined the Service in 2022 and has already demonstrated a strong commitment to professional growth, discipline, and community service.
Born and raised in Potchefstroom, Petersen completed her schooling in her hometown before pursuing higher education.
She holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in Public Governance with Public Administration and Labour Relations Management as well as a Bachelor of Arts degree in Public Governance with Policing Practice.
Petersen's academic achievements reflect a deep passion for governance, justice, and effective policing. By combining education with practical policing experience, Petersen brings a unique perspective to SAPS, one that emphasises accountability, modern policing practices, and community trust.
As a Public Order Policing operator, her daily duties include crowd management and maintaining peace during public gatherings, a role that requires courage, patience, and professionalism.
Petersen believes that her grounding in governance and policing practice equips her to approach these duties with fairness and integrity, ensuring that the rights of citizens are respected while order is maintained.
Policing has shaped her life by instilling discipline, resilience, and a deep sense of responsibility. It has also taught Petersen that service is not just about enforcing the law, but about building trust and protecting the dignity of our communities.
"It was not easy to juggle work and studies, but I love what I am doing, and I believe the sacrifices are worth it because they allow me to serve with knowledge and purpose," says Petersen.
Petersen has a deep connection with the community she serves: "Joining SAPS was not just a career choice, but a calling to serve and protect the people I grew up with".
"Balancing my studies with policing was a challenge, but it taught me perseverance, discipline, and resilience. Today, I am proud to serve with dignity and honour, knowing that my education and experience allow me to contribute positively to SAPS. Looking ahead, I aspire to grow into leadership roles, mentor young recruits, and continue driving innovation in policing practices to strengthen the bond between SAPS and the communities we serve," says Petersen.
Constable Cleone Petersenβs journey reflects the SAPS Reset Agenda in action - young officers leading with knowledge, discipline, and vision. Her story is a reminder that the youth of SAPS are not only the future of policing, but also the present force driving transformation and strengthening the bond between the police and the communities they serve.
