I was at a steakhouse in Dallas, eating alone at the bar. Next to me was a young guy in a military uniform. He was eating a baked potato and a side salad.

Nothing else. He kept eyeing the steaks coming out of the kitchen, then looking at his wallet. I flagged the bartender.

"Put his tab on mine," I whispered.
"And send him the ribeye.
Tell him it's a mistake from the kitchen."

The bartender grinned. "You got it."

Ten minutes later, the huge steak landed in front of the kid. "I didn't order this," he said, panicked. "I can't pay for this."

"Kitchen messed up," the bartender lied perfectly. "Manager said to eat it or we have to trash it." The kid ate like he hadn't seen food in a week.

When he finished, he asked for the check.

"Covered," the bartender pointed at me.

The kid turned to me. "Sir, I..."

"Thank you for your service," I said.
"Get home safe." He stood up, shook my hand, and walked out taller than he walked in.

I took this photo of Bobby on his back porch after a lovely meal prepared by his wife Luciana at their ranch in Virginia. That whole day is engraved in my memory.

Luciana cooked the beef Argentina style and we sat for hours talking. We talked about the film we made with Billy Bob Thornton, Jayne Mansfield’s Car. Bobby called Billy Bob “the redneck Orson Welles” and he meant it lovingly.

We talked horses, dogs, Clemson football, dancing the tango and Marlon Brando. At one point he told me to go find the letter Marlon had sent him after they worked together on The Godfather. It was typed and perfectly composed. Bobby was more proud of that letter than his Oscar. Marlon was the actor he looked up to.

I had ridden across country to attend Rolling Thunder with New York Myke and I so enjoyed being with Bobby. He was the actor I looked up to. His ability to find the truth of a scene was something special.

Over the years I would call Bobby and we’d talk movies and barbecue. He loved barbecue and I’d always let him know when I was having it in Lockhart, Texas. Smitty’s or Kreuz or Blacks… which one was best.

I will miss Bobby. I will always be proud that I got to play his son. Rest in peace brother.

There seems to be some confusion about the SAVE America Act. If it becomes law, you will NOT be able to vote with your drivers license alone.
You’d need:

1. A passport, which more than half of Americans don’t have and costs at least $130
OR
2. A birth certificate PLUS your photo ID with matching names, which nearly 70 million married women lack
OR
3. Military services papers (not a military ID alone) with sensitive info.
