Yes Hamas won the 2006 legislative elections. That vote was real and internationally monitored, and it was Hamas’s fair win. And yes, since the coup it staged in Gaza in 2007, seizing the territory by force from the Palestinian Authority, Hamas has ruled there and sat inside this building as its parliament. None of that makes the building Hamas’s.

A parliament building isn’t the property of whoever happens to be occupying its seats that decade. The White House doesn’t belong to Donald Trump or Obama, 10 Downing Street doesn’t belong to whichever British party holds power, and a courthouse doesn’t belong to the judge behind the bench. Administrations come and go the institutions they occupy belong to the people

I unreservedly denounce the Israeli regime’s decision to issue construction tenders for the E1 settlement project. This tract of land east of Jerusalem has long been critical to the viability of a Palestinian state. Building on it would divide the West Bank and gravely undermine the prospect of a contiguous Palestinian homeland.

Israeli settlements in the occupied West Bank are illegal under international law, yet Israel continues to act with utter impunity. Coming amid unprecedented settler violence against Palestinian civilians in the West Bank and the ongoing genocide in Gaza, this decision shows that the Israeli regime has abandoned even the pretence of seeking peace or respecting the will of the international community.

Malaysia stands staunchly with the Palestinian people and their inalienable right to a sovereign, viable, contiguous and independent Palestinian state. Malaysia will take careful note of any international company that chooses to participate in these tenders and will act accordingly.
