Ticks can live for up to 3 years without ever biting anything. The best repellent is DEET. Some people are intolerant of it. Ticks do not crawl up into trees. They don't have the apparatus for that. They stay close to the ground and prefer grassy fields. Stay out of the tall grass if you're not prepared. If you have deer, you have ticks.
