The priest let out a cry, but my eyes stayed shut.

It was time for prayer, and Mother had always warned us never to open our eyes while talking to God. “The devil is restless when people pray,” she would say.

The priest cried out again, louder this time.

Then a “Kwaa” sound

As I lay there, shaking, I wished I could see Mother again.

Just to ask her one question.

Where did all the prayers go?

The shouting became fewer.

Then fewer.

Then none.

It was them.

The people Mother prayed about every night.

The people she asked God to keep far away from our village.
