When Liz Truss was in Downing Street, gilt yields surged, the markets became the story and within weeks her premiership was finished. She lasted 49 days after the mini-budget triggered a much wider political crisis.

Fast forward to now. Ten-year UK gilt yields have been around 5.4%, their highest level since 2007, under Andy Burnham’s Labour government.

And suddenly everything has an explanation.

Yes, the circumstances are different. This latest rise is part of a much wider global bond sell-off, with energy prices and inflation fears playing a major role. But what exactly have Labour done internally in the UK to ease that problem, nothing, just persited with this NEt Zero madness.

Back then, Truss became the problem almost immediately. The political pressure became unbearable and she was gone.

Now borrowing costs are even higher and the government simply carries on.

That is why people start wondering whether the numbers really determine who survives in politics, or whether the political establishment decides who is expendable first and explains the numbers afterwards.

Same gilt market. Very different reaction.

That comes from the Metropolitan Police’s own data.

That works out at roughly:

❌ One rape every 54 minutes
❌ 186 every week
❌ 803 every month

We keep being told London is getting safer.

But recorded rape is actually UP on the previous 12 months.

If rape is getting worse, as the Met’s own data shows…

…that doesn’t sound like a safer London to me.

I was labeled far-right, a fascist, a racist and antisemite by disgusting outlets a couple of days ago, and this morning I was scalded.

I expect the person responsible for this attack to feel the FULL FORCE OF THE LAW. I expect the @metpoliceuk , the Prime Minister @andyburnham and the Home Secretary @ShabanaMahmood to act immediately to investigate and secure justice for the attacker.

Every three years in medieval England, the king's men went from cottage to cottage cutting the toes off the peasants' dogs.

It was called lawing. The dog's forefoot went on a block of wood, a chisel was set across three claws, and they came off with one blow of a mallet. The Charter of the Forest, 1217, records the correct method: three claws of the forefoot, but not the ball.

A dog with three toes missing cannot run down a deer. That was the entire purpose. A third of England was royal forest, every animal in it belonged to the king, and a poor man's dog was the one piece of hunting equipment he could not be stopped from owning. So they left him the dog and took its feet.

If the inspectors found yours intact, the fine was three shillings, about a month's wages. Before 1217 they simply took your ox.

No law ever told that man he could not eat meat. The law took his bow, his dog's toes and his right to the wood, then left him entirely free to work out the rest for himself. He worked it out. He ate oats and beans, and he raised children who ate oats and beans.

That is how it is always done. Meat is never banned for the poor. It just becomes, by one sensible regulation after another, impossible to get.

Count the sensible regulations being drafted for your dinner this year.
