We are pleased to announce that registrations for our Digital Research Infrastructure Retreat 2025 are now open! If you are involved in #data, #computation & #research this is the event for you! Check out the panels & apply now: https://t.co/5UoXgJbMsG #DRIRetreat2025
Thrilled that the paper has just appeared in @PhysRevLett. Excellent work from Matt Burman's @EPSRC -funded PhD. Thanks to @N8CIR and @hecbiosim for computational resources. Check the updated thread in @agnesnoy.bsky.social!

A large scandal in the HPC community revealed that drinking water from the Thames was being used to cool data centres, wasting a valuable resource ⬇️ https://t.co/jak9sGy7t5
Our 2nd panel of the day is the hotly anticipated “The environmental impacts of infrastructure”, chaired by Samantha Ahern. If you’re not here, I’ll be live tweeting our panel’s thoughts about this pressing issue.
Sustainability problems in HPC include:
-Energy-intensive running & cooling costs
-Inefficient code
-Life-expired HPC waste
-Poor consolidation to higher-tier HPCs
-Chemicals & materials used
A common attitude is obtaining the highest specs regardless of environmental cost.
At a UKRI even this week in Manchester and the afternoon break has 3 (3!) Tunnocks options: tea cakes, caramel wafers and caramel logs.
Amazing!

After the conference dinner at the Midland last night, we've had a quiet start to our first session: "The impact of AI and machine learning on DRI workflows". With the rise of Co-pilot, this is generating a lot of discussion! Check out today's sessions: https://t.co/jbPAANyHc5
Our first panel of the day is “Data Collection, Sustainability, and Integrity”, answering your questions about keeping and reusing data safely and ethically. It’s our busiest day with over 100 people in-person! #DRI2025
Can you engineer serendipity? One table at #DRI2025 wants to bridge the gap between WFH and collaboration through 3rd places like conferences, keeping the door open, and of course, luring people in with free food! 🌯🍕🍩🍉
@women_in_hpc As a team leader, it is important to acknowledge problems and bias. It may be that we can do little, but it’s better than nothing. Being aware of problems, like women asking for promotions less than men, means you can support those team members and build a value-led culture.
A great question from our first #DRI2025 panel: “How can organisations maintain employee trust in their EDI commitments amidst the rise of ‘tech bro’ cultures?”
See our panelists’ answers in the 🧵below ⬇️
@N8CIR are incredibly committed to #equality and #diversity in #HPC. We have a @women_in_hpc chapter and have developed a diversity checklist for recruitment to remove bias, which is now used all over the world ⬇️ https://t.co/jtoVi6VGaU
#DRI2025 is off to a great start with our first panel on #Collaboration and #Communication: “Building Trust and Effective Communication Between DRI Professionals and Researchers from Different Disciplines” chaired by Saranjeet Kaur Bhogal from @imperialcollege@ImperialRSE
Welcome everyone to the DRI Retreat 2025! This is our biggest retreat yet and the energy in the room is electric! If you want to join the conversation, use #DRI2025
Come along to a 1-day event exploring Environmental Digital Humanities at the University of Manchester! Open to all, this event features inspiring speakers presenting diverse approaches, a method clinic & opportunities to network. Don't miss out!
