The What Ifs of History and 9/11

In a must-see interview of @tspooky by @C__Herridge his discussion of Able Danger is eerily similar and strikingly parallel to my own experience going back to 1993 and issuing reports and warnings that were all dismissed and suppressed while standing watch as a naval intelligence officer on the Terrorism Desk in the Pentagon’s NMJIC Alert Center supporting the J2 while assigned to the DIA HQ unit.

We used very advanced data mining and link analysis technology and issued indications and red alert warnings that included AQ intentions to return to finish the job and that they could even use airplanes as weapons and not just trucks when they tried to to drop the World Center Towers the first time.

In addition, at NSA a breakthrough skunk works program called ThinThread was developed well before 9/11 to deal with a well-known NSA challenge program – and met the challenge posed by the massive explosion in data triggered by the digital age and internet, with the rapid ability to sift through all the staggering volumes and variety and velocity of data to find the threat needles in the haystack inn near real-time, with built-in 4th Amendment privacy protections by design.

However, and just like what happened to Able Danger, ThinThread was shutdown before 9/11, even though it was ready to go operational in late 2000/early 2001.

After 9/11, I resurrected ThinThread and as the executive program manager led the team that upgraded it to version 2.0 over several months, then sifted through the main intelligence collection databases at NSA and found actionable operational intelligence on key elements of the AQ 9/11 plot, including information on their operational cells.

However, NSA shutdown ThinThread a second time and buried the data and the program, after they defied the Congressional Intelligence Authorization Act signed into law by the President for 2002 to operationally deploy ThinThread to the 18 most critical counter terrorism sites.

I remain haunted and burdened to this day by the tragic what ifs of history as we approach the 25th anniversary of that terrible day on 9/11 when almost 3,000 people lost their lives because the US government unconscionably failed to keep people out of harm’s way (despite all the many indications and warnings) and deliberately prevented the very best of American inventiveness and ingenuity (including Able Danger and ThinThread as well as others), from providing for the common defense, as required under the Preamble of the Constitution, through direct malfeasance and coverup as willful acts of commission – that also unleashed a warrantless mass surveillance program, a torture program and a number of misbegotten and tragic multi-trillion dollar overseas military campaigns that led to untold death and suffering.

There has got to be a better way, than the base human condition that continues to prevail after all these millennia of recorded history.
