A few years ago, while I was still at SuperSport, an ex international (I won't mention his name so as not to embarrass him) in an interview with our NPFL show NaijaMade, was very vocal about the national coach inviting domestic league players.
So when we went to cover a league game, I interviewed him on camera and asked him to name 5 players from the league who should be called up. He went blank. Note that at the time, he was coaching a league club. But could not name a single player to be selected.
My issue with comments like this, if Eguavoen actually made them, is that it is both disingenuous and hypocritical.
A national team is a selection of the BEST eleven players a coach can pick, who are capable of stepping in when called upon, not who plays where and certainly not because they may not be needed.
It's also hypocritical because here, Cerezo wants "3 to 4 players" from the local league caller up. But in 2021, when he was coach of the team to Afcon, he only picked one, goalkeeper John Noble. And that was almost because we did not have another choice after Maduka and Uzoho.
If he was so keen on local players, why did he not pick the "3 to 4" back then?

You guys should calm down on this @victorosimhen9 matter oh. Allow this boys focus on the next task ahead. What he said was right, but the way the message was passed is wrong. Have seen players do more than what he did.
He should have done that in the dressing room not on the pitch. But this things happened in football, it’s normal. He’s not the first player that will do this and he will not be the last.
