NAUS 2026 PRESIDENTIAL DEBATE: OFFICIAL FOLLOW-UP STATEMENT
The National Association of University Students (NAUS) Convention Planning Committee (CPC) acknowledges receipt of, and has carefully reviewed, the apology statement issued by the KILOSHELE Campaign Organisation (KCO) on behalf of its presidential aspirant, Comrade Sunday Temidayo David, regarding the circumstances surrounding the recently concluded NAUS 2026 Presidential Debate.
The Committee notes the withdrawal of the allegations previously made against the CPC and its officials, as well as the public acknowledgment that the claims suggesting that the CPC or any of its members requested or received financial inducement from any presidential aspirant were false and unfounded.
The CPC hereby accepts the apology in good faith and considers the public clarification an important step towards preserving the integrity of the electoral process and promoting unity within the Association.
For the avoidance of doubt, we reiterate that at no point did any member of the CPC request, solicit, demand, or receive any form of financial gratification from any presidential aspirant as a condition for participation in the Presidential Debate. The Committee remains firmly committed to the principles of fairness, transparency, neutrality, and equal opportunity for all contestants.
We also wish to state that nothing before the Committee suggests that the said aspirant was deliberately excluded from the debate. Five other presidential aspirants successfully participated in the programme and presented their manifestos before the student populace without hindrance.
Available records and evidence show that the said aspirant joined the debate session. The Committee further notes that multiple opportunities were provided for his participation as a “Speaker”. Several requests and invitations were made by the Host of the debate and CPC Spokesperson, Comrade Ogochukwu Isioma, as well as the Co-Host and Secretary of the CPC, Comrade Greatness Akerele, to enable him come up as a speaker. Regrettably, these requests were neither acted upon nor accepted throughout the three-hour programme. These facts have since been independently confirmed by several leaders, stakeholders, observers, and participants who witnessed the proceedings.
While the Committee maintains its position on the facts of the matter, we consider the apology and retraction issued by the aspirant sufficient basis to bring this issue to a close. Accordingly, the CPC has resolved to discontinue further consideration of the matter and remain focused on its primary responsibility of delivering a credible, free, fair, and transparent electoral process.
As the Association progresses towards its convention, we urge all aspirants, campaign organisations, supporters, and stakeholders to conduct themselves with decorum, respect established procedures, and channel grievances through appropriate mechanisms. Aspirants are particularly encouraged to avoid misinformation, unfounded allegations, and propaganda capable of undermining confidence in the electoral process or bringing the reputation of the CPC and the Association into disrepute.
NAUS has always been guided by the ideals of intellectual engagement, healthy competition, and democratic values. We therefore encourage all contestants to continue engaging one another on issues, programmes, and ideas that advance the interests of Nigerian university students.
The Committee remains committed to providing a level playing field for all aspirants and assuring every stakeholder of a transparent and credible election.

OFFICIAL STATEMENT FROM THE NATIONAL ASSOCIATION OF UNIVERSITY STUDENTS (NAUS) CONVENTION PLANNING COMMITTEE (CPC)
The leadership of the National Association of University Students (NAUS) Convention Planning Committee (CPC) wishes to commend all presidential aspirants who participated in the Presidential Debate held on Sunday, 21st June 2026. We appreciate the maturity, vision, and meaningful contributions demonstrated by the aspirants in sharing their plans and ideas with the general student populace.
The Committee has, however, become aware of a memo, voice note, and other communications currently circulating, allegedly issued by one of the presidential aspirants, Comrade Sunday Temidayo David (@OptimistGold) of the Adekunle Ajasin University, Akungba-Akoko (AAUA). In these communications, it was alleged that he was deliberately excluded from the Presidential Debate and that the Secretary of the CPC, Comrade Greatness Akerele (@bimbylex), requested financial gratification from his Director-General as a condition for participation in the debate.
The CPC wishes to categorically state that it remains committed to the principles of fairness, transparency, accountability, and integrity throughout the electoral process. As a committee entrusted with the responsibility of conducting a credible election, we take every allegation seriously and will not disregard any complaint brought before us.
Consequently, we hereby call on any individual in possession of credible evidence, documents, recordings, screenshots, messages, or any other material relevant to these allegations to submit such evidence through the appropriate channels for proper review and investigation. To ensure a timely, transparent, and conclusive resolution of this matter, the Campus Planning Committee hereby issues a 24-hour ultimatum to all concerned parties to present any evidence in support of these allegations. All evidence must be submitted to the Committee on or before 8:00 a.m. on Tuesday, 23rd June 2026. Failure to provide credible evidence within the stipulated timeframe may compel the Committee to proceed with its review and take appropriate decisions based on the facts and information available before it.
Furthermore, if any investigation establishes that any member of the CPC, including its Secretary, engaged in misconduct, solicited financial gratification, or compromised the integrity of the electoral process in any way, appropriate disciplinary measures shall be taken immediately, including removal from office where necessary. The Committee assures all stakeholders that no individual will be protected from accountability if found guilty of any wrongdoing.
On the other hand, we also wish to remind all aspirants and stakeholders that making serious allegations without credible evidence may constitute an attempt to mislead the student community, damage reputations, and undermine the credibility of the electoral process. Should an investigation reveal that these allegations are false, malicious, or deliberately fabricated, the Committee reserves the right to invoke relevant provisions of the electoral guidelines and impose appropriate sanctions on those responsible.
The CPC remains open, impartial, and committed to ensuring a free, fair, transparent, and credible electoral process. We therefore urge all stakeholders to remain calm, refrain from spreading unverified information, and allow due process to take its course while the Committee addresses this matter in accordance with the principles of justice and fairness.
Thank you.
