My son brought his new girlfriend over for Thanksgiving last year.
She’s 23. Works the night shift at a 24-hour laundromat. Always smells faintly of detergent and fabric softener. Quiet. Kept her hands folded in her lap the whole dinner.
After they left I told my wife, “She’s nice… but I always pictured him with someone who had bigger plans. Someone who doesn’t spend her nights folding other people’s socks.”
Three months later my wife had a stroke while I was out of town on a work trip.
My son called me from the hospital, voice shaking. I was six hours away.
By the time I got there it was almost midnight. My wife was stable but scared and confused. The nurses were short-staffed. She kept asking for her “soft blanket” from home — the old one she always slept with.
I was about to drive back to get it when the girlfriend walked in.
No makeup. Still in her work shirt. She’d left the laundromat mid-shift the second my son texted her.
She didn’t make a big speech. Just sat on the edge of the bed, held my wife’s hand, and started talking to her in that calm, low voice like she was folding towels at 2 a.m. and nothing in the world could rush her.
When my wife started crying from the fear, the girl leaned in and whispered something I couldn’t hear. Whatever it was, my wife stopped shaking.
Later I tried to thank her and offer her money for the shift she lost.
She looked at me the way you look at someone who’s still learning something basic.
“Sir,” she said, “you don’t pay family. Just make sure she knows she’s not alone when she wakes up.”
I sat in that plastic hospital chair until sunrise feeling like the smallest man alive.
I had measured her by the smell of laundry soap on her clothes.
Completely missed the size of the calm she carried into a room when everything else was falling apart.
Taking trips with your partner is so important in a relationship, at least I think it is. I feel like traveling together brings another level of intimacy, happiness, and connection to the relationship.
One day gents you must understand that women are reciprocators, not initiators. They step AFTER y’all step. You lead, they FOLLOW. Idk how else to explain this but it’s really SO simple.
🤦🏽♂️
i truly wanna be a WIFE BUT i wanna be a genuinely happy wife. A submissive wife. A loving wife. A peaceful wife. A secure wife. A comfortable and safe wife to a honorable, ambitious, hardworking, LOYAL, loving, romantic, funny, spontaneous God fearing husband

After giving birth, a woman's internal wounds take six months to heal, 12 months for physical recovery, two years for hormonal balance, and up to five years to rediscover her identity. Relationships frequently fail during this time due to a lack of understanding. Be kind and patient with new mothers; they are facing more challenges than it appears.
