It is a basic principle of American democracy that the government can’t selectively target individuals simply because of their political beliefs or what they say. But that’s exactly what the Trump Administration is doing to Congresswoman Ilhan Omar of Minnesota.
To understand why this is so appalling, it’s important to know the facts. Congresswoman Omar came to this country with her father when she was 12 years old. Five years later, her father became a naturalized citizen. If Ilhan had been 18 at the time, she would have had to apply for citizenship separately. But because she was 17, she became a naturalized citizen automatically.
Congresswoman Omar went on to graduate from college, work as a community organizer, become the first Somali-American legislator elected to public office in the U.S., and win a seat in Congress. There, she has been one of the Trump Administration’s fiercest critics, which has led the president to repeatedly single her out as someone who he believes does not belong in this country.
Now the Administration is actively trying to deport Congresswoman Omar, seemingly based solely on the unsubstantiated theory that she was actually 18 when her father was naturalized, and therefore is not a citizen. Federal agents have raided her home, confiscated personal records, and seized her phone — all to try and uncover a nonexistent smoking gun from 20 years ago that will somehow make their case.
Think about that. The full weight of the federal government is being brought down on a law-abiding elected official because she has dared to criticize the president. And it’s not the first time this has happened. Under President Trump, the Justice Department has repeatedly gone after those he considers his political enemies — from the Attorney General of New York, to the former head of the FBI, to members of the Federal Reserve.
In those cases, the prosecutions either stalled or were dismissed for having no basis in law, and the same is likely to happen in this case. But not before Congresswoman Omar’s life has been turned upside down, her legal bills have piled up, and she’s been forced to spend time fighting unsubstantiated charges instead of serving the people of Minnesota.
The fact that any president, or any administration, is willing to engage in such transparent efforts to intimidate someone should outrage all Americans, regardless of how they feel about Congresswoman Omar’s political views. Because if this becomes the new normal, there’s no reason to believe it will stop with her — or that future presidents, in either party, won’t do the same.
I’m ok. Make no mistake: this is an attempt to target political enemies and weaponize federal law enforcement. For ten years, Trump has targeted me with baseless lies and smear campaigns. This is just the latest escalation in his campaign of political intimidation.
I will not be silenced.
Trump is an authoritarian.
He wants to intimidate his political opponents, the media and all those who disagree with him.
Ilhan Omar came to America legally as a child refugee fleeing civil war, became a citizen and was elected to Congress.
Trump is weaponizing the federal government to silence opposition. Fight back. Defend democracy.
Nigerian-American Daniel Umemezie: “I believe that when a young writer chooses to inhabit the fiery tension between who they are and how they express that identity, they embody art itself.” Umemezie is the 2026 National Youth Poet Laureate of the United States.
“Among the many shocking facts in ‘Naza,’ Yuval Abraham and Rachel Szor’s unflinching expose of systematic Israeli war crimes in Gaza, is a title at the end noting that many of the revelations in the film were previously published in the ‘Guardian’ newspaper, ‘+972 Magazine,’ and ‘Local Call,’” writes Bilge Ebiri. At the picture’s press conference in Venice, not long before the film received what might be the longest-ever standing ovation in film-festival history, Szor also reminded everyone that Palestinian journalists have reported on these facts. In other words, the information has been out there for months, and much of the world has shrugged, if not ignored it completely.
“Perhaps it will be hard to ignore now, with the appearance of this starkly shot, damning documentary, which was a very late and out-of-the-blue addition to the Venice and New York Film Festival lineups. That secrecy was warranted. ‘Naza’ is a bombshell,” writes Ebiri.

"It's going to be impossible to teach a whole range of topics."
Palestinian American scholar Rashid Khalidi is canceling a course on Middle East history he was scheduled to teach this fall at Columbia University, citing the school's capitulation to the Trump administration.
The humanitarian crisis in Gaza is unimaginably acute and devastatingly heartbreaking. Children and families are starving, and the entire population faces severe deprivation and unimaginable suffering.
The evidence is overwhelming, with multiple aid agencies and countries repeatedly urging critical and urgent action.
The international community must do more to ensure immediate, unimpeded aid reaches all in need.
Every moment counts to prevent further loss of life.

Consistent with its historic commitment to a just and lasting peace in the Middle East, I have decided that France will recognize the State of Palestine.
I will make this solemn announcement before the United Nations General Assembly this coming September.
The urgent priority today is to end the war in Gaza and to bring relief to the civilian population.
Peace is possible.
We need an immediate ceasefire, the release of all hostages, and massive humanitarian aid for the people of Gaza. We must also ensure the demilitarization of Hamas, secure and rebuild Gaza. And finally, we must build the State of Palestine, guarantee its viability, and ensure that by accepting its demilitarization and fully recognizing Israel, it contributes to the security of all in the region.
There is no alternative.
The French people want peace in the Middle East. It is our responsibility — as French citizens, alongside Israelis, Palestinians, and our European and international partners — to prove that peace is possible.
In light of the commitments made to me by the President of the Palestinian Authority, I have written to him to express my determination to move forward.
Trust, clarity, and resolve.
We will achieve peace.
The World Food Program, an arm of the United Nations, said that the hunger crisis in Gaza had reached “new and astonishing levels of desperation, with a third of the population not eating for multiple days in a row” due to Israel’s genocidal siege. https://t.co/hyViREqKiS
Key statements by former UN Emergency Relief Coordinator Martin Griffiths:
•Israel is committing genocide in the Gaza Strip, and the ongoing blockade has led to escalating famine, causing the deaths of many children from hunger.
•The situation in Gaza is the worst I’ve seen in five decades of humanitarian work.
•There is no doubt that hunger and disease are being used as weapons of war.
•Nothing in my career compares to what is happening now: people are collapsing from hunger in the streets, and hospitals are documenting the catastrophe.
•It is unimaginable that children are dying this way… our shared humanity is at risk.
Had a great meeting with @ZohranKMamdani and am deeply impressed by the grassroots campaign he is running.
The Oligarchs are prepared to undermine democracy & spend tens of millions to buy the election for his opponents.
We will not allow that to happen. Stand with Zohran.
