Several financial warning signs were identified in a new performance audit of Columbus County, NC. ⬇️

Columbus County has remained on the Local Government Commission's Unit Assistance List since 2020, a designation for local governments requiring additional financial monitoring.

OSA’s audit found:
• Columbus County's FY 2024 financial statement audit was filed 78 days late.
• The FY 2025 financial statement audit had not been completed as of July 2026.
• Available General Fund balance fell from 44.32% of expenditures in FY 2022 to 18.96% in FY 2024, dropping below the Local Government Commission's 20% benchmark.
• The County's budgeted taxable property valuation declined by approximately $328 million between FY 2024 and FY 2026, which could have a large downstream effect on operating revenue.

While the report does not conclude that Columbus County is in a financial crisis, it identifies financial management issues and warning indicators that, if left unaddressed, could lead to more serious consequences for county management and taxpayers.

Caseworkers also have to endure some clients who disrespect them by being called out of the person’s name, profane language, sexual harassment, gender discrimination on the basis of Price Waterhouse v. Hopkins, etc.
