We needed data to see how much alcohol can safely drink people living with metabolic syndrome.
In a large Spain-USA collaborative study, we just showed that even small amounts of alcohol exacerbate liver fibrosis in people with MASLD.
It's likely that the alcohol thresholds initially established to differentiate MASLD vs MetALD should be modified accordingly.

🆕 Interesting meta-analysis on primary prevention of esophageal variceal bleeding in #cirrhosis patients:
⁉️ Which is better: NSBB, ligation (EVL), or both?
✳️ Better=survival
✳️ n=1400
✳️ Overall survival: NSBB=EVL
🔑 Survival in compensated cirrhosis: NSBB better than EVL
‼️ Survival in DEcompensated cirrhosis: NSBB=EVL=NSBB+EVL
🤨 Risk of bleeding: NSBB=EVL in all groups, possibly NSBB+EVL better than monotherapy

🔬 A study of 507 🇮🇹 patients with autoimmune hepatitis reveals major shifts over 40 years:
📅 Age at diagnosis is up, with fewer kids affected
‼️ Adults now more often face acute hepatitis but less cirrhosis at the start
🎯 Current typical case: a woman over 50, with a strong chance of beating the disease without cirrhosis or needing a transplant
💊 Responses to treatments have improved, leading to better control of #AIH
🔑 Early detection & treatment
