Today's conviction is a sigh of relief after the acquittal of Rittenhause last week. This case should not have been a toss up to begin with, but we are grateful that the gavel landed on the right side of justice. Rest in Power, Ahmaud Arbery.
The jury reached its decision after more than 10 hours of deliberations following a trial in which prosecutors argued that the defendants provoked a confrontation with Arbery and defense attorneys said their clients were acting in self-defense. https://t.co/XyctqsGuQC
2,504 prisoners sit on death row today. Over 50,000 prisoners are serving life without the possibility of parole. While LWOP is a step down from the severe inhumanity of state-sanctioned murders, it is still a death sentence. Let us not forget that in moments like these.
Yesterday, much of America was business as usual while Julius Jones was just hours away from execution on death row. He was yet another Black man facing execution at the hands of the State, a legal lynching, as his mother described it.
Thanks to the tireless advocacy of Julius, his family and his community, he was granted clemency just hours before his execution and sentenced to life without the possibility of parole. It is an immense win that he is still with us, but LWOP is still an unjust death sentence.

"According to a 2020 report published by the Prison Policy Initiative, there are 2.3 million Americans being held in jail but a whopping 74 percent of that total population has not presently been convicted of any crime.
One has to ask themselves, in a nation where the presumption of innocence is supposed to be at the core of our criminal justice system, how could it be that we have so many people rotting in prison?
