This Notre-Dame window has survived more than 760 years, including a lightning strike and the 2019 fire. It has outlasted revolutions, wars, major restorations, and one of the cathedral's darkest days. Yet much of what you see today still includes glass crafted during the reign of King Louis IX.

The south rose window was completed around 1260 as a gift from King Louis IX. At nearly 13 meters across, it is the largest of Notre-Dame's three rose windows. Over the centuries it suffered damage from structural movement, the July Revolution of 1830, and a lightning strike before being carefully restored by Viollet le Duc in the 19th century.

Even after all of that, 84 of its original 13th century stained glass panels remain in place. They also survived the devastating 2019 fire because the cathedral's stone vaults shielded the window from the flames above. It is easy to admire the colors without realizing that some of the glass was made more than seven centuries ago.

Next time you're inside Notre-Dame, don't just look at the rose window as a whole. Spend a minute looking at the individual panels and remember that some of them have been watching over visitors since the 1200s.
