Türkiye is an important partner and NATO ally for both the Netherlands and the EU. We share close economic ties and work together closely on security and migration. Türkiye also acts a mediator on a number of major geopolitical conflicts, such as Ukraine and Gaza. I discussed these matters this afternoon with President @RTErdogan.
Of course, the war in Iran and the situation in the Strait of Hormuz also featured heavily in our discussion. Iran borders Türkiye, so this war is taking place on its doorstep. We also discussed stability in Syria and looked ahead to the upcoming NATO Summit in Ankara. I look forward to meeting President Erdoğan there.

“On behalf of all the ordinary men, women and children who were thrust overnight into a new reality they did not choose.
On behalf of the children who now go to school in an air-raid shelter.
On behalf of the women who keep their families afloat and their country running by working in factories.
On behalf of the men who’ve had to swap a suit-and-tie for combat fatigues, and are fighting to defend their territory. Metre by metre.
Who are doing so because they know and feel that every square centimetre is a piece not just of Ukraine’s soil, but of its dignity too. That is what they are defending.
President Zelenskyy, Volodymyr: this award is for your country. For you as president. And for all the Ukrainian people.”

Today in Middelburg it was my privilege to join Elizabeth Roosevelt Johnston (the great-granddaughter of President Franklin D. Roosevelt) in presenting the International Four Freedoms Award to President @ZelenskyyUa of Ukraine.
He accepted the award on behalf of the Ukrainian people as a ‘recognition of the courageous fight for our freedom and democracy under exceptionally difficult circumstances’.
🇳🇱 Ambassador Joep Wijnands met with Aivo Orav, the new Head of Delegation of the EU to Türkiye. The ambassadors discussed the importance of 🇪🇺🇹🇷 relations, ranging from trade and migration to security and politics. We congratulate Ambassador Orav on this important new position.

The bond between the Netherlands and Türkiye is strong. Glad to meet with Minister @HakanFidan in Ankara and to discuss shared priorities.

This morning, I laid a wreath to honour the memory of Mustafa Kemal Atatürk: the founder of the Republic of Türkiye.
He transformed the young Republic and led it to a better and progressive future. His legacy is celebrated by many, in Türkiye, the Netherlands and beyond.
Türkiye is our strategic partner and key NATO Ally. In these turbulent geopolitical times, we must work to deepen our ties.
That is why I am visiting Ankara. I will meet with my Turkish colleague @HakanFidan to discuss our cooperation, the situation in the Middle East, and more.
77 years of NATO.
We value the strong partnership between 🇳🇱 and 🇹🇷 within the Alliance. Following the Summit in The Hague, the Netherlands passes the chairmanship to Türkiye, host of this year’s Summit in Ankara.
