We have yet to hear more about the promised town hall on race, so we’re making our own space to discuss the grievances and demands Black & allied staff outlined in this letter signed by 73% of all employees @nowthisnews #ChangeThis
The leadership at @NowThisNews and @GroupNinemedia was made aware that 85% of eligible staff had signed union cards several weeks ago, and have since recognized our unit. (6/7)
In taking this step, we’re proud to join our Group Nine colleagues @thrillistunion and @thedodounion, who have both successfully fought for more equitable workplaces. (5/7)
We want to ensure that our company’s bright future is sustainable and values all of our essential contributions. Every employee deserves to be paid fairly, have access to a career path, and have a seat at the table for critical decision-making about their progression. (3/7)
We, the employees of the NowThis editorial staff, are proud to work for a progressive media outlet and are committed to building a workplace rooted in diversity, transparency, inclusivity, and equity—values we proudly espouse in our coverage. (2/7)
.@nowthisnews please practice what you preach. Take this as an opportunity to learn and grow from your employees. Their demands are very reasonable. And the entire Internet is watching. #ChangeThis#NowThis
I will say that during my one year tenure in the early days of NowThis, I was treated well. But I saw some of my black colleagues suffer microaggressions & stalled career advancement. And it sounds like little has changed since 2015 (despite the company's massive growth/success).
Testimonials: “It was made very clear to me that I was the token."
"...all of the employees of color who came forward about their trauma were punished."
"The company decided that my work was more important than me."
"This year alone, we have posted more than 479 videos tagged ‘police brutality,’ ‘racism,’ and/or ‘Black Lives Matter.’ Yet, none of our senior leadership is Black on a company or newsroom level."
"The actions of @nowthisnews have demonstrated that BIPOC staff is not valued as much as the profit that their stories, cultures, and likenesses attract. Videos of Black victims far outnumber our Black staff, who are largely bottlenecked in entry level positions..."
Thread 1/5
"NowThis has built an audience largely on the depiction of violence against Black people…[It] preaches the values of diversity, representation and progressive action, but continues to function as a company controlled by white leaders & at the expense of Black employees…” SHEESH
Especially frustrating when institutions/organizations that embrace and espouse progressive ideas do not practice what they preach. Standing in solidarity with these workers and hoping that employers across this industry and others take time to self reflect and make changes.

Standing with this crew. How can a news team speak with authority on the intricacies of race without BIPOC perspectives present and active in leadership? Without that, fumbling occurs and you get stories like these.
