TL;DR (For the lazy):
The Apex is just a really fun pad to use for me. It is stupid fast, but whenever I want to lock in a bit more, I can just put some pressure on the mouse and get a bit of control from the textured feedback. It is a very unique fast pad in my collection, and if you are looking for something really fast that still gives you some actual feel to work with, this is very easy to enjoy and keep using.
Design:
I dig the design a lot, like previous Tekkusai's designs (aside the Singularity and the Guardian), it gives me that Souls-like or Shadow of the Colossus kind of vibe, where the main character is going up against some giant foe, and it just has that aura to it.
That is the kind of thing I really like on a pad, it is not just “cool art,” but something that really stands out on the desk.
Surface/Glide:
This is where the Apex gets really interesting. It is a speed glasspad, but it has enough texture and feedback that it does not feel like you are just floating on a frictionless sheet of glass.
The coating plays a big part in that. It helps the pad feel very fast and smooth overall, but it still keeps enough tactility that the surface does not turn into a super smooth pad with no feedback. So even though the glide is stupid fast, it still has some actual feel to it.
That is also why pressing down on the mouse matters here. If I want it to feel a bit more controlled, I can do that. It is still fast as hell, but not in a way that feels totally unusable.
The Apex feels really good for tracking, but it definitely makes you work for it. It is fast enough that you need to be on top of your mouse control, so it is not one of those pads that does most of the work for you. Flicks and micro adjustments also takes some time to get used to, but once you settle into it, the pad feels really rewarding to play on.
The pad also tends to handle skin stick and sweat pretty well, I used it both with and without a sleeve, and had no issues at all. I mostly play with a sleeve anyway, but I really enjoyed using it without the sleeve.
As for the dust situation, the texture helps mask minor debris better than smoother surfaces, which I really like, since I tend to get distracted a lot by specks of dust on smooth pads.
Final thoughts:
The Apex is a really fast glasspad, but it still feels like its own thing. It is insanely fast, but the coating, texture, and pressure control make it a lot more fun than I expected.
That is also why I would call it one of the most fun pads I have used. It has the speed to feel exciting, the feedback to feel usable, and the art makes it feel special on the desk.
It feels fast, it feels different, and it is one of those pads that actually makes me want to keep using it instead of just trying it once and moving on. If you are looking for a unique fast pad that still feels interesting to use, I think this is the one to recommend.
