For three years the father of my two sons, and Pakistan’s former Prime Minister, Imran Khan, has been brutally penalised by his political opponents, in a personal vendetta by Army Chief, Asim Munir,  which according to the UN,  amounts to torture and which  is now taking a potentially fatal toll on his physical and mental health. 

He has endured 3 years of solitary confinement. For nearly ten months now his family has been denied contact with him. He has been deprived of the most basic human contact, denied access to books, lawyers and doctors.

The international human-rights standards are unequivocal. Under the UN’s Nelson Mandela Rules, solitary confinement lasting more than 15 consecutive days is prohibited and amounts to torture.

He has endured this treatment not for 15 days, but for three years.

Pakistan’s own Supreme Court has now intervened: ordering comprehensive  medical treatment, access to his personal doctor, regular family visits and twice-weekly calls with his sons.

Yet those orders are being defied.

This is no longer simply a Pakistani political matter. It is a human-rights emergency.

He has deep and lifelong ties to Britain. He studied at Oxford University, captained Oxford University cricket and spent years playing county cricket in England. His relationship with this country stretches back more than half a century. His charitable activities were internationally recognised, and  include building the only free cancer hospital in Pakistan as well as a university.

His sons, my two boys, Sulaiman and Kasim, are British citizens. They have been forced to watch their father’s health decline from thousands of miles away, prevented from visiting him, denied visas, publicly threatened by government officials with arrest themselves, and even denied court-mandated regular phone calls. 

I have repeatedly appealed to the UK government to intervene. Purported attempts at back channelling have evidently failed. The previous Foreign Secretary @DavidLammy informed me in writing that Britain would not  intervene if my sons, British citizens, are arrested when they travel to Pakistan to visit their father. 

@FCDOGovUK: Britain must now speak out publicly and unequivocally. Demand that Pakistan comply with its own Supreme Court;  restore Imran Khan’s medical access, his right to see his family, end his prolonged isolation and uphold his fundamental human rights.

Pakistan is a Commonwealth country. Britain has a long and proud tradition of standing against arbitrary detention, inhumane treatment and the denial of fundamental rights. Those principles mean very little if we invoke them only selectively and neglect them when inconvenient.
This an appeal to the new Burnham government  to please now do the right thing.

It is critical and urgent that Imran Khan be examined and treated at a proper medical facility. Our recommendations to CJP clearly demanded that he be examined and treated at Shifa International Hospital (Islamabad) by specialist doctors, under the supervision of his personal physicians and in the presence of his family members. It is extremely unfortunate that Chief Justice Yahya Afridi expressed satisfaction with the doctors’ visit to Adiala Jail and completely disregarded the family’s lawful and legitimate demands.

What are they hiding?

The extraordinary effort by the government and establishment to prevent Imran Khan from being properly examined, tested, and treated in a reputable tertiary care hospital, under the supervision of his own doctors and in the presence of his family, raises serious questions. Government ministers have falsely claimed that his treatment was delayed because the family insisted on their presence along with his personal doctors. This was not a delaying tactic; it was a necessary safeguard to ensure transparency, proper care, and his safety. The additional doctor who accompanied the PIMS doctor to Adiala Jail was sent ONLY for examination, not treatment. What kind of comprehensive examinations can be conducted inside a jail facility, which lacks the equipment, environment, and safeguards of a proper hospital?

The PIMS doctors, along with a specialist from Al-Shifa Trust Eye Hospital, were sent to Adiala Jail on Monday, 16th February, to show compliance with the deadline set by Chief Justice Yahya Afridi. However, on Tuesday, 17th February, Imran Khan conveyed a message through Bushra Bibi via her daughter, clearly stating that he was NOT satisfied with the doctors’ visit or the treatment being provided, and he specifically asked that his blood tests should be conducted in the presence of his personal doctors, Dr. Asim and Dr. Faisal. We REJECT any medical reports drawn up as a result of examinations conducted in the absence of Imran Khan’s personal physicians and family member. URGENCY IS OF THE UTMOST IMPORTANCE.

My father has been under arrest for 845 days. For the past six weeks, he has been kept in solitary confinement in a death cell with zero transparency. His sisters have been denied every visit, even with clear court orders allowing access. There have been no phone calls, no meetings and no proof of life. Me and my brother have had no contact with our father.

This absolute blackout is not a security protocol. It is a deliberate attempt to hide his condition and prevent our family from knowing whether he is safe.

Let it be clear: the Pakistani government and its handlers will be held fully accountable legally, morally and internationally for my father’s safety and for every consequence of this inhumane isolation.

I call on the international community, global human rights organisations and every democratic voice to intervene urgently. Demand proof of life, enforce court ordered access, end this inhumane isolation and call for the release of Pakistan’s most popular political leader who is being held solely for political reasons.

“The concept of a ‘hard state’ that Asim Munir is attempting to implement in Pakistan is entirely misguided. In its true sense, a “hard state” is one where the Constitution reigns supreme, justice remains independent, democratic freedoms are protected, and the national interest outweighs personal gain.

In contrast, Asim Munir’s notion of a ‘hard state’ signifies a system in which the pillars of democracy are dismantled and ‘Asim Law’ prevails. No ‘hard state’ can ever be established without the support and will of the people. The atrocities being perpetrated under ‘Asim Law’ are not strengthening the state. They are, in fact, eroding its very foundations. No country can become strong by turning its guns on its own citizens, as witnessed on November 26th (2024) and in Muridke, where the army, paramilitary Rangers, and the police opened fire on their own people.

The people of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa have given a clear and overwhelming mandate to Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf. This mandate grants me the constitutional and democratic authority to determine the province’s policies, for my accountability lies solely with the people. It is also the right of the Chief Minister of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Sohail Afridi, to ensure the implementation of the policies, formulated in consultation with me, for which the people reposed their trust and cast their votes in our favor.

During PTI’s tenure, prudent policies fostered peace across Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and beyond. Yet, since the regime change, the nation has witnessed a consistent deterioration in stability. Over the past three years, I have consistently emphasized the need for wisdom and foresight in dealing with Afghanistan through peaceful means. The current strained relations with Afghanistan are deeply concerning. Hatred and confrontation serve no one’s interests; only policies framed by genuine representatives of the people can bring about a lasting solution to terrorism.

The baseless and fabricated cases against me are being deliberately prolonged. In the Al-Qadir University Trust case, justice has been systematically denied for the past ten months. After an extended delay, the case was finally scheduled for hearing, yet the decision on bail continues to be postponed. I instruct all PTI political leaders, members of assemblies, and lawyers to regularly attend and remain present during all court proceedings of my cases, and to continue their presence until justice is served. Participation in open-court hearings is your legal and democratic right.

During PTI’s tenure in government, Nawaz Sharif was allowed daily meetings with numerous political figures in jail, with unrestricted access to family members. Even formal dinners were arranged. In stark contrast, I am being held in complete isolation. There is no precedent for such political vendetta in Pakistan’s history.

I am not being provided the basic facilities guaranteed under prison regulations. Over the past ten months, I have been allowed to speak to my sons only once, and that too for two brief intervals of three minutes each. I am being deprived not only of my fundamental human rights but also of my rights as the head of a political party, to meet party officials and consult with them. Hurdles are constantly placed to obstruct my meetings with lawyers, political colleagues, and family members. This is a blatant violation of my fundamental and legal rights.”

" In these dark days of unprecedented oppression and tyranny, the massive turnout of the Pakistani nation in response to the August 5th call for protest is not only admirable, it is a powerful sign that a new dawn is beginning to break through the long-standing darkness of injustice that has engulfed our country. The way people took to the streets, despite extreme fascism, to assert their constitutional rights is highly commendable.

I extend special appreciation to the people of Punjab, who broke through the shackles of fear despite raids and arrests. The citizens of Sindh, Balochistan, Gilgit-Baltistan, Azad Kashmir, Punjab, and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, who participated in the nationwide protests on August 5th in such large numbers, deserve admiration. A nationwide protest of such magnitude, despite immense pressure on the leadership, is a remarkable display of public awareness and awakening.

Never before in Pakistan’s history has any dictatorship, even under martial law, perpetrated such levels of cruelty as are being carried out today by Asim Munir under his ‘Asim Law’. This can only be compared to the era of Yahya Khan, when brutal fascism was unleashed upon Mujibur Rahman's party and the public, crushing democratic will and, ultimately, splitting the country in two, all for the sake of holding on to power. What is happening in the country today painfully echoes the Fall of Dhaka. Then too, democracy was strangled, rule of law eliminated, freedom of media and the right to protest denied, and the law of the jungle imposed. Deliverance from this system of oppression is only possible if the nation stands united.

The next significant milestone in our movement is the 14th of August: the day our forefathers, after immense sacrifices, secured independence from British colonial rule. Yet, the nation continues to be deprived of true freedom. Without the restoration of the Constitution and the rule of law, independence will remain an illusion. On August 14th, the entire nation must once again rise against the fascism gripping our beloved country.

We must liberate ourselves from this mafia. And true liberation is only possible when a nation is willing to make sacrifices. I am enduring the most inhumane conditions in prison for the sake of my people. Even fellow prisoners here acknowledge that no ordinary inmate is subjected to the kind of treatment that I am being subjected to. In their futile attempt to break me, my wife Bushra Bibi is also being held in deplorable conditions. Yet, I remain steadfast in my commitment to the supremacy of the Constitution and the restoration of democracy. Achieving genuine freedom will require collective sacrifice from all of us.

I will never bow down before this ‘Dacoits and Duffers Alliance’, nor will I ever accept ‘Asim Law’. Even if I must spend the rest of my life in prison, I am ready.

Remember: no force in the world can defeat a brave nation. I urge all Pakistanis to cast aside the fear of imprisonment. A special message to the leadership of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI): abandon your fear of jail and rise to lead the people, answering the call of democracy.

The military operation in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa is being conducted solely to weaken PTI. A similar operation was launched during the ANP's tenure, and by adopting Musharraf-era failed policies, ANP was eventually wiped out from Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. I have always maintained that military operations are never a solution, they only breed more terrorism, hatred, and destruction. A new operation must not be conducted in the tribal areas. The problems of that region can only be resolved through dialogue with local leaders and elected representatives. 1/2 What is Pakistan’s Circular Debt?

Circular debt is the reason your electricity bill keeps rising, even when you use less power

Every Pakistani household pays a hidden tax buried deep within their electricity bill. It’s called circular debt, and it’s costing families thousands of rupees annually for electricity they never consumed.

Circular debt adds Rs3.81 per kilowatt-hour to every electricity bill across Pakistan. This isn’t for the electricity you actually use, it’s to pay off debts accumulated by a broken energy system.

When the government owes money to power companies, and power companies owe money to fuel suppliers, and distribution companies can’t collect bills from consumers, the unpaid amounts pile up. As of July 2025, this debt has reached Rs2.3 trillion, money that ordinary Pakistanis must now pay back through inflated electricity bills.

A typical household using 300 units of electricity monthly pays an extra Rs1,143 just for this debt, over Rs13,000 annually. That’s money for school fees, medicine, or food instead diverted to cover the energy sector’s financial mismanagement.

Electricity prices have nearly doubled from Rs16 per unit during the PTI era to Rs30 per unit today. Much of this increase stems not from higher generation costs, but from accumulated debt that consumers must service.

This hidden tax hits hardest on families already struggling with inflation. Unlike income tax that exempts the poor, the circular debt surcharge applies to everyone who pays an electricity bill. A labourer earning Rs20,000 monthly faces the same per-unit debt charge as a wealthy businessman.

The burden forces families into impossible choices: pay inflated electricity bills or endure sweltering heat without fans and air conditioning. Small shopkeepers close early to avoid high evening tariffs. Students study by candlelight when families can’t afford electricity for lighting.

Pakistan Institute of Development Economics estimates a total public welfare loss of $13 billion due to circular debt growth. Industries relocate to countries with cheaper, more reliable power. Factories reduce shifts. Textile mills, Pakistan’s largest export sector, struggle to compete internationally when energy costs eat into profit margins.

When businesses suffer, employment falls. When employment falls, fewer people can afford to pay electricity bills, worsening the very debt crisis that started the cycle.

The fundamental problem is structural. The government acts as both sole buyer and price-setter for electricity, creating conflicts of interest that prevent market-based solutions.

Power companies receive guaranteed payments whether they generate electricity or not through “take-or-pay” contracts. These agreements have allowed producers to extract Rs1 trillion from consumers whilst contributing to overcapacity that makes electricity expensive.

Distribution companies lose roughly 20% of electricity to theft and aging infrastructure, but paying customers must cover these losses through higher bills.

In July 2025, the government injected Rs1,275 billion to reduce circular debt, borrowing from commercial banks to pay off power producers. Yet within days, circular debt had reached Rs780 billion again, proving that financial injections without structural reform merely postpone the problem.

Each government promises to solve circular debt, then leaves office with the crisis worse than before. The PTI left Rs1.6 trillion in circular debt. The PDM government saw it rise to Rs3.3 trillion. The current administration continues the same pattern of temporary fixes.

Every month that circular debt persists, Pakistani families grow poorer and businesses less competitive. The Pakistan Economic Survey 2022 warns that without reform, circular debt could reach Rs4 trillion by 2025.

A dark era of the former Chief Justice of Pakistan, Qazi Faez Isa's tenure has come to an end. He is on his way to London to be elected as a Bencher of Middle Temple, a position for those who have made significant contributions to rule of law. He is not fit for this role because of the brazen manner in which weakened rule of law in Pakistan.

As a member of Middle Temple, and as a Queen Mother Scholar, I will register my protest against the nomination of a man who is responsible for allowing gross human rights violations with impunity, mocking victims of harassment and torture, and targetting the largest political party and it's members.

He weakened the independence of the judiciary in the most brazen manner. Justice Mansoor Ali Shah's statement aptly summarises Qazi Faez who 'showed neither courage, nor moral fortitude to defend the judiciary'.
