Irony at its finest: Solheim defending Ranil and his charges
⭕ Mr. Erik Solheim was appointed to lead the UN Environment Programme in 2016, with a 4-year term.
⭕ In 2018, UN audit found that Solheim spent $488,500 on travel in 22 months, being away for 529 days during that period. (around 80% of the time).
⭕ The audit flagged 76 undocumented days in Oslo and Paris with no official purpose.
⭕ 🇸🇪 Sweden, 🇩🇰 Denmark, and 🇳🇱 Netherlands froze UNEP funds after the audit findings surfaced & created a funding crisis, forcing UN chief António Guterres to act.
⭕ Solheim was forced to resign, and he stepped down on Nov 20, 2018, after pressure, repaid some travel expenses.
⭕ Ranil Wickramasinghe and Solheim go way back. Solheim helped Ranil when he was PM in 2002 to secure the controversial ceasefire agreement with LTTE. In 2022, when Ranil was President, he appointed Solheim as his International Climate Adviser (said to be a voluntary, unpaid role).
⭕ Ranil has been accused of mishandling Sri Lankan taxpayers’ money for international travel, while Solheim was forced out of UNEP for almost the same reason.
The irony of friendship; if you spend enough time together, you start borrowing each other’s habits..
@JeevanThondaman Could you share your thoughts about Dr.Keheliya Rambukwell &
Where is the your place ,when brought no confidence motion against Dr.Keheliya Rabukwella .
While it is commendable that Speaker Ashoka Ranwala stepped down from his post over questions of his educational qualifications, other MPs in the govt. who are unable to prove their qualifications should step down immediately in keeping with the NPP pledge to maintain transparency. It was afterall President Anura Kumara's vision to maintain a clean Parliament so it is indeed concerning to see some MPs from the NPP itself having misled the public on their qualifications @anuradisanayake@Dr_HariniA
Since my childhood, every election map has highlighted a divided country, with clear regional splits in the results. For the first time, I’m seeing a truly unified Sri Lanka across the map. No more divide and rule. #GenElecSL#SriLanka
For some strange reason President @anuradisanayake brought a few thousand people in buses last evening all the way to Jaffna and spoke to them here, when he could’ve gone to their own districts and addressed them there. Travel cost would’ve been much less 😃
M. A. Sumanthiran, Lakshman Kiriella, G. L. Pieris, Tissa Attanayake, Chandima Weerakkody and Shan Wijayalal de Silva, have signed the no-confidence motion against the Speaker for approving the much-disputed Online Safety Bill amidst ‘irregular procedures’ https://t.co/FKfuNwTUqn
One country, two laws. How many days was Natasha Edirisuriya in remand? And this will create reconciliation? shame. Can the monks do whatever they want? #Lka
This was how police dragged the #journalist@Uduwaragedara out of a trishaw for videoing them. After this, he was beaten severely & denied medical treatment.
Where the hell are the Western defenders of democracy like @USAmbSL?
#lka #SriLanka #journalism #JournalismIsNotACrime #MediaFreedom #HumanRights #SriLankaprotests #democracy
This is wrong!
@Uduwaragedara was an active voice in the Aragalaya. He is entitled to hold a dissenting opinion n as journalist to report it.
His views might be against the gov, but surely gov does not have the right to hinder his freedom of assembly. Repression ! Shame!
Journalist Tharindu Uduwaragedara was arrested while covering a protest. If you think this kind of force is “a given” you’re very much a part of the problem.
We absolutely cannot keep dismissing the malicious and brutal silencing of dissent by @RW_UNP and his henchman.
