NOW IN THEATERS: Cast Aside the Clouds, from director Mary Darling and co-directors Bre Vader and Felicia Sobhani, is the first feature film to bring the story of the Bahá'ís in Iran to the big screen. But it's no tragedy and it isn't a victims' narrative. Cast Aside the Clouds is a love story, between Leyla, a young Bahá'í woman, and Sassan, a Muslim man navigating Iran's tension between prejudice and progress. And it evokes the love Bahá'ís have for Iran irrespective of 47 years of persecution under the Islamic Republic. The film is at New York's Village Cinema until 4 June, the Lumiere Cinema in Los Angeles from 4-11 June, the Wayfarer Cinema in Chicago from 18-25 June, and in Washington DC at the Angelika from 25 June to 1 July.

Anisa Fanaian Re-Arrested in Semnan to Serve Prison Sentence
On 11 May 2026 Mrs. Anisa Fanaian, a Baha’i resident of Semnan, was arrested and taken to resume serving her prison sentence.
Security agents arrested Fanaian at her home in Semnan while carrying an arrest warrant for the enforcement of the remainder of her sentence.
Mrs. Fanaian had previously been released from Semnan Prison on 2 October 2025, after the Supreme Court accepted her request for judicial review and referred her case to a parallel branch for reconsideration. However, in renewed proceedings, Branch 10 of the Semnan Province Court of Appeals upheld her sentence without modification, again sentencing her to eight years in prison.
She had earlier been arrested on 11 March 2025, in one of the streets of Semnan and transferred to prison to begin serving her sentence but later released pending her appeal.
In March 2024, the Revolutionary Court of Semnan sentenced Mrs. Fanaian to a total of 16 years in prison, along with financial penalties, deprivation of social rights, and confiscation of part of her family’s property. The charges against her included “forming a group with the intention of disrupting national security,” “educational or promotional activity contrary to Islamic law,” and “propaganda against the regime.” The sentence was later reduced to eight years by Branch 7 of the Semnan Court of Appeals, with seven years enforceable under Article 134 of the Islamic Penal Code.

Thank you Elliott Abrams and @CFR_org for covering the devastating danger of expulsion facing nearly half of the #Bahai community in #Qatar: "These attacks on the small and law-abiding Baha’i community are victimizing people who have committed no crimes and seek only to live in peace and worship freely." In a joint declaration, 21 (and counting) French parliamentarians have expressed their firm condemnation of the situation facing Peyvand and Borna Naimi, young Iranian Bahá'ís arbitrarily detained since January 8 and March 1, 2026, respectively.
Imprisoned in Kerman, they are enduring unbearable physical and psychological torture, including mock executions, aimed at extracting false confessions that could serve as a pretext for a death sentence. Accused without evidence of participating in protests and attacks against Revolutionary Guards, the true reason they are being targeted is their religious beliefs.
The parliamentarians note that since 1979, the Iranian government has systematically made Bahá'ís scapegoats during every political or social crisis, accusing them without proof of espionage or conspiracy.
They demand that France use all diplomatic levers to pressure the Iranian regime to end these persecutions and secure the immediate release of Peyvand and Borna Naimi, as well as all Bahá'í and prisoners of conscience in Iran.

Romina Goli Arrested and Charged in Sari
On 9 May 2026 Ms. Romina Goli, a Baha’i resident of Sari, was arrested by security forces and formally charged during an interrogation session held on 10 May.
During the interrogations at the Sari Prosecutor’s Office, she was charged under Article 500 and Article 500 bis of the Islamic Penal Code with “propaganda against the regime” and “propaganda activity contrary to Islamic law.” Authorities subsequently issued a one-month detention order against her.
Ms. Goli was arrested from her home in Sari after agents approached her under the pretext of delivering a package. No arrest warrant was presented at the time. Family members twice requested that the officers present a judicial warrant — first by her parents and later by her brother when he arrived at the house — but the agents allegedly replied: “Even if we have a warrant, we will not show it to you”. They also stated that had the door not been opened, they would have entered by climbing over the wall.
During the operation, her mobile phone, her mother’s phone, a laptop, and several religious books were confiscated. Investigators also questioned family members about her online activity and social media posts. Following her arrest, she was taken to an undisclosed location.
As of the time of writing, no information has been released regarding her place of detention.

Members of India's legal fraternity have issued a joint statement expressing deep alarm over the escalating persecution of Bahá'ís in Iran, who are being scapegoated amid the current war.
The statement highlights the cases of Peyvand Naimi and Borna Naimi, a young father of a three-year-old child, who have allegedly endured severe torture, mock executions, electric shocks causing severe burns, prolonged solitary confinement, and detention in a section known as the "death suite."
These actions constitute grave violations of international human rights law, including the absolute prohibition of torture and the right to a fair trial.
The legal fraternity calls upon Iranian authorities to immediately end all forms of torture, ensure the safety and rights of all prisoners of conscience, and release those detained solely on account of their faith. They further urge the Government of India and people of conscience everywhere to raise their voices and demand justice.
