Nigeria’s Passport Plunges From 90th To 181st Position. Visa-Free Access Falls From 44 Destinations To 24
Nigeria’s passport has reportedly dropped to 181st out of 196 countries in the latest IziVisa Passport Ranking Index, down from 90th position in July 2026.
According to data published on https://t.co/P9ueSkFASY, Nigerians can travel to 24 countries visa-free, obtain visas on arrival in 16 countries and access 43 countries through electronic visas.
The report highlights a decline in Nigeria’s visa-free score from 44 destinations in July to 24 in the latest IziVisa ranking.
IziVisa explained that passports are ranked according to the number of destinations their holders can access without obtaining a visa beforehand, including visa-free entry, visas on arrival and electronic visas.
The United Arab Emirates leads the 2026 ranking, with access to 185 of 198 destinations through the three travel categories, while Switzerland occupies second position. Luxembourg, Malta, Denmark, Spain and Finland also feature prominently.
Separately, the July 2026 Henley Passport Index placed Nigeria 90th out of 199 passports, with visa-free access to 44 destinations. The index, published by Henley & Partners, assesses passports against 227 travel destinations using data from the International Air Transport Association.
Among African countries, South Africa ranked 49th globally, with access to 101 destinations, followed by Botswana in 61st position with 81 destinations. Morocco ranked 67th with 71 destinations, while Kenya placed 68th with 70.
Ghana ranked 70th, with access to 67 destinations, while Nigeria shared its position with the Democratic Republic of the Congo and Turkmenistan in the Henley ranking.
However, the IziVisa and Henley indices use different methodologies and coverage, meaning their rankings are not directly comparable.

The U.K Gives Nigeria £136 Million in Aids Annually While They Lose $15 Billion to Corruption Every Year. We Shouldn’t Be Giving Them Money — British Journalist Lowri Turner
British broadcaster Lowri Turner has questioned the United Kingdom’s decision to provide Nigeria with £136 million in annual aid, arguing that the country has wealthy individuals and loses billions of dollars to corruption.
Turner made the comments during a discussion on foreign aid with Labour MP Danny Beales on The Matt Allwright Show on Channel 5, broadcast on October 16, 2026.
She argued that Nigeria’s wealthy population and the alleged scale of corruption raise questions about the need for British aid, adding that foreign assistance could encourage corruption and make recipient countries dependent on donor nations.
“We are currently giving Nigeria £136 million a year, right? They have eight and a half thousand millionaires there, and they lose approximately 15 billion dollars a year in corruption. So we are giving money to a country that already has a great number of very wealthy people in it, and also this money will be fuelling the corruption. So I don’t think we should be giving”
She added, “I just thought, look at one country. That’s one example of it. There’s no doubt that aid funnels corruption in certain countries. It also infantilises them”
She concluded saying, “I think if you ask some people in African countries, they say, ‘We don’t want white saviour complex, thank you very much. We want actually to be able to build a road and have vaccinations.’”

@verticalKD@grok No, it's pretty much what I expected. Comparing current day nigeria to the 1800s is plain wrong. Yes certain areas lack the bare minimum of medical infrastructure needed but we're leaps ahead of what most people in the 1800s had.
