Care and domestic work, both paid and unpaid is at the heart of communities and is an integral component of economies all over the world. However, when it comes to unpaid care and domestic work, women bear a disproportionate burden. There is need to involve men.

A major milestone for Kenya’s Care Economy!

I’m Dr. Josephine Obonyo, Secretary of Gender at the State Department for Gender and Affirmative Action. Today’s conference marked a significant step forward the validation of Kenya’s Draft National Care Policy, a process that has been nearly three years in the making.

This policy is about recognition, reward, and redistribution.

For too long, care and domestic work often done silently and without pay has gone unrecognized, despite being the backbone of our homes, communities, and economy. The Care Policy aims to change that by ensuring that care work, whether done by women or men, is formally acknowledged, fairly rewarded, and more equally shared.

We are now on the final stretch: submitting the policy to Cabinet for approval and implementation.

This has been a collaborative journey, with both state and non-state partners walking alongside us. We now call on all stakeholders to support its dissemination and nationwide implementation.

A fairer care economy means a stronger Kenya for everyone.
