Prior to the COP 29, small-scale farmers developed a statement uniting them on the climate crisis frontlines, calling for equitable climate justice, agroecological practices, and polluter accountability. As climate impacts worsen, a policy shift is urgently needed.

Small-scale farmers advocate for agroecology as a sustainable alternative to industrial agriculture, emphasizing its benefits for biodiversity, resilience, and community well-being. Rooted in firsthand experience with changing climate patterns, agroecology represents a forward path centered on ecological harmony and social welfare.

In their statement, they position agroecology as essential for climate justice, closely aligned with their lived experiences and aspirations.

We are at the 2nd Eastern Africa Agroecology Conference, scheduled from March 25th to 28th, 2025, at the Argyle Grand Hotel in Nairobi under the theme: "Strengthening Agri-Food System Transformation for Resilience, Sustainability, and Socioeconomic Development."

This conference serves as a pivotal platform for stakeholders to explore and promote sustainable agri-food systems. 

At the conference, ESAFF Uganda is exhibiting different agroecological products and publications while highlighting the successes and Agroecology methodologies used. Our exhibition offers a unique opportunity for delegates to learn from small-scale farmers driving agroecological transitions in Eastern Africa.

This morning, we had the privilege of hosting a team from @oxfamnovib to explore the interconnectedness of the Rooted in Diversity and Cultivating Change in a Warming World projects.

The discussion provided us with valuable insights and a deeper understanding of how these two initiatives can complement and reinforce each other. Together, we identified shared areas of improvement and potential innovations that could further enhance the food systems work, not only in the country but also on a global scale.

This collaborative exchange has inspired new ideas and strengthened our commitment to advancing sustainable, inclusive solutions in the face of climate challenges.

During the ToT training on Value Chain Development, we conducted a rapid market Survey in Gulu main market to facilitate a deeper understanding of market dynamics, consumer preferences and competition.

This survey targeted farmers, traders, transporters, consumers and other agricultural industry experts and helped participants identify opportunities and challenges in their specific value chains, fostering targeted strategies for improvement.

ESAFF Uganda to host La Via Campesina Regional Secretariat

La Via Campesina Southern and Eastern Africa (LVC SEAf) formalizes the transition of the regional office to ESAFF Uganda.

This afternoon in Kampala, the leadership of ESAFF Uganda and LVC SEAf signed an MOU regarding the hosting of the LVC SEAf secretariat by ESAFF Uganda for the next mandated period.

Together, we will continue to build the unity and and solidarity among peasants, champion the peasant struggles, rights and aspirations, build the food sovereignty of our nations, and ensure a just and sustainable food system for all.

The Agroecology Business Hub trained 52 small-scale farmers from the West-Nile region to help them create successful businesses in the coffee and honey value chains.

Today, together with other Civil society organizations, we presented the CSOs position paper on the Agro-Industrialization program in response to the National Budget Framework Paper (NBFP) FY 2025/26 to the committee on Agriculture, Animal Industry and Fisheries raising concerns that may arise from the Agricultural Budget reduction on 6.86% in the 2025/26 plan and suggesting recommendations for increasing the budget.

The areas of concern included misalignment of the budget allocation with the NDP 4 allocation, challenges in Agricultural extension services, poor prioritization of Agro-processing, value addition and post-harvest handling, Strengthening food safety, security and nutrition policy frameworks among others.

Led by Hon. Auma Linda Agnes, the committee urged CSOs to help conduct a study on different government initiatives that seem exploitative to enable them challenge these initiatives driving Agro-Industrialization behind and come up with an authoritative voice to revamp cooperatives hence improving value chains as a systematic way of dealing with Agricultural produce if we are to upscale Agro-Industrialization as a key to Uganda's Economic Growth.

The committee committed to present these recommendations to its line ministry.

There is a growing appreciation of crop varieties managed by local farmers, also referred to as farmers’ varieties. Farmer varieties are often appreciated for their attractive characteristics for both producers and consumers, such as adaptability to harsh environmental conditions and high nutritional values.

The Seed system adapted by small scale farmers dates back to the origin of agriculture and over the years, where every farmer had a strategy to select, multiply and use seed for the next season.

ESAFF Uganda at the #CAADPKampala2025 Summit

The Comprehensive African Agriculture Development Programme (CAADP) Summit in Kampala brought together African leaders, policymakers, and stakeholders to align Agricultural Sector Plans with the African Union's Agenda 2063.

CAADP provides a framework for developing National Agricultural Investment Plans (NAIPs) to drive sustainable agricultural growth, food security, and economic development.

ESAFF Uganda, in collaboration with @Afsafrica ensured active participation of small-scale farmers. Farmers contributed through side sessions informed by their collective pre-summit statement, reflecting aspirations for sustainable agriculture and resilient food systems.

In a session on agroecology, farmers shared experiences and actionable strategies in scaling up Agroecology as a sustainable approach.

Our National Chairperson, Mr. Hakim Baliraine emphasized that Agroecology is not just a farming practice; it is a way of life. It empowers us to restore soil health, protect biodiversity, ensure household food security, and build resilience against climate shocks. He noted that with resources and partnerships, we can scale up these practices to feed our communities and secure a sustainable future.

Small-scale Farmers called for strengthened farmer-managed seed systems, incentives for agroecological practices, farmer tailored research extension services, and inclusive policy dialogues.

This summit is a vital step toward advancing sustainable agriculture in Africa. ESAFF Uganda will continue advocating for farmer-led innovations in NAIPs and aligning indicators with operations.

Small-scale farmers urge the African Union Commission (AUC), member states, and all stakeholders to seize this crucial moment and adopt a truly inclusive and transformative vision for agriculture in Africa.

They further call upon the AUC and all stakeholders to ensure that the Kampala Declaration is not merely another document, but a turning point that puts people, communities, and the environment at the heart of African agriculture and food systems.
