One of the best picks in the bureaucratic transfers is Gagandeep Singh Bedi for MAWS department which is directly headed by chief minister C Joseph Vijay.

Here’s a key point from my story in May 2023 for @TOIChennai . The last order Bedi signed before his transfer from Greater Chennai Corporation was a direction to officials to ensure there was no cost excess in bidding. This means, if a project is Rs 100, the value should not go above Rs 100 during bidding. This directly hurt many contractors, ministers, councillors and politicians, who otherwise enjoyed a flat 10.5% escalation in bidding, which sometimes went up even by 30%.

He had directed the officials to give a written explanation even for a 2% excess in project value making it difficult for tender inviting authorities to allow bid escalations. Tenders going in minus of the work value did not benefit both the contractors and politicians, and did not go well with the larger ecosystem.

With MAWS and its sister departments largely concerning tenders and corruptions surrounding it, Gagandeep Singh Bedi’s expertise and authority can help in regulation.

Tamil Nadu chief minister C Joseph Vijay has ordered the revamp and modernisation of Amma Unavagams across the state.

At present, 383 Amma Unavagams are functioning under the Greater Chennai Corporation, while another 237 are operated by other corporations and municipalities across Tamil Nadu.

The chief minister held consultations with senior government officials and directed authorities to upgrade infrastructure facilities at the canteens, immediately procure necessary cooking equipment, and ensure uninterrupted supply of hygienic and quality food to the public.

The chief minister also ordered that expenses for the renovation works and procurement of equipment be met from the general funds of corporations and municipalities.
