“you don’t look like a Muslim”
Ok what am I supposed to look like? A fucking plate of chicken biryaani with a bowl of sheerkurma? https://t.co/rLux5ev5FX
So many of us expressing shock and anger over the video of the child being beaten for his ‘Muslim-ness’. Many are asking on the internet, how did we get here. How did we get here ? We got here when you were celebrating music festivals through love Jihad rallies in the city. We got here when you where what-abouting through the lynching of Muslims on the streets. We got here when you changed your display picture to the national flag but refused to silence your bigoted family members on Whats App groups. We got here when you demonised and vilified us in popular culture, we got here when you cheered for ‘Kashmir Files’ getting the National Award for best film on national integration. We got here when you clicked selfies with the Prime Minister but lost your voice when Muslim students, activists were being thrown behind bars. We got here when a railway police officer went on a shooting spree in a train identifying and killing Muslims invoking Modi and Yogi but none of our public figures expressed their disgust.
We got here when you started distancing yourself from those dissenting against the government, being careful not to be seen in public with them.
A few weeks ago an acquaintance said “I have two Muslim’ friends and neither feel unsafe in the country’. We got here because you continue to gaslight us and the ongoing apartheid calls against us. We got here because you and your family members flock to theatres to watch films like Kerala Story and act naive when we remind you that you are enabling Islamophobia. So please for heavens sake, spare me your shock and horror

We are talking about a seven year old kid being hit for being a Muslim. Bilkis Bano had a five month old foetus in her womb when she was gang raped and the rapists released on the 75th year of Indian independence.

A story about Danish Siddiqui.
In Feb 2020, I was rehearsing my TEDx talk in India when he, a fellow speaker, sat down next to me to ask about my work. I had no idea who he was. He said simply he was also a journalist. Only later did I realize the humility in that description.
"I have a two-year-old son. When he grows up and asks me about my work as a photojournalist, I must have something meaningful to say,” said Danish in an interview three years ago. He will know.
I still can’t find the right words to pay tribute to the great man that Danish Siddiqui ‘was’.
I will always remember how enamoured I was since I heard him at my orientation at AJK MCRC, 2018. His sheer passion towards his work reflected through his images and through his words.
A brave man- unafraid to bring the harsh reality in front of the world, his images spoke louder than words could. Sir, you will always be an inspiration and continue to push us to do right by humanity. You will live on through your work and bravery.
Deeply saddened by the passing of Danish Siddiqui. We have lost a photo journalist par excellence whose work underscored his committment to humanity. Heartfelt condolences. #danishsiddiqui
A lot of people may not know this. Danish started off as a Tv reporter like us, after college. He however decided to go behind the screen(very rare). Self taught himself photo skills and went on to scale new heights. You will always be remembered through ur work my friend.
Neither India’s Prime Minister nor the Foreign Minister have said ONE WORD about the death of photojournalist Danish Siddique at the hands of Taliban.
This shows the visceral & institutionalized hatred of the govt towards journalists who don’t kowtow to them or do their bidding.
I tweeted about the exceptional Danish Siddiqui and there are assholes celebrating his death in the comments, purely because of his religion. This is what he spent his life chronicling — this hate, this prejudice, this divisive, broken political and religious fabric of our world.
Even in his death, he has scared the hate mongers. His lens captured and told the truth so strongly that the ‘lies and hate’ think they are liberated today. But @dansiddiqui is now an institution for all the budding and courageous photojournalists! He lives on.
#danishsiddiqui
What I remember about Danish Siddiqui is that he never said no to anything I asked of him when I was at Reuters. "Take it to Danish and it'd get done", everyone knew.
A brilliant photographer, a devoted husband, a grounded man who'd go out of his way to help everyone
Shocked!
