The intentions may have been noble, but Russian involvement in Afghanistan in 2001 would have drawn ire across the spectrum, with memories of the Soviet war still fresh. Afghanistan's descent into decay began with the Soviet intervention, and Russia has much to atone for.

Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov, referring to the September 11, 2001 attacks, said Moscow was ready at the time to cooperate with the United States in combating terrorism in Afghanistan.
