जौहर राजपूतों की एक युद्धकालीन प्रथा थी। जब किला घिरा होता और हार पक्की लगती, तो महिलाएं (और बच्चे) सामूहिक रूप से आग में कूदकर आत्मदाह कर लेती थीं। इसका मकसद यह था कि दुश्मन उन्हें पकड़कर अपमानित न कर सके, गुलाम न बना सके या बलात्कार न कर सके।

यह रोजमर्रा का रीति-रिवाज नहीं था। सिर्फ घेराबंदी के समय होता था। महिलाएं शादी के कपड़े पहनकर रात को जौहर कुंड में आग लगाकर प्रवेश करती थीं। अगली सुबह पुरुष साका करते थे — केसरिया वस्त्र पहनकर, माथे पर राख लगाकर किले से निकलकर लड़ते हुए मृत्यु को गले लगाते थे।

सबसे प्रसिद्ध जौहर चित्तौड़गढ़ में हुए:
1303 में अलाउद्दीन खिलजी के हमले के समय (रानी पद्मिनी की कहानी से जुड़ा)
1535 में बहादुर शाह के हमले के समय (रानी कर्णावती)
1568 में अकबर के घेरे के समय

राजपूत संस्कृति में जौहर को कायरता नहीं, बल्कि अभय राजपूत जौहर माना जाता था। यह सम्मान (मर्यादा) की रक्षा का सबसे बड़ा प्रतीक था। दुश्मन के हाथों जीवित बचना अपमान से भी बड़ा माना जाता था, इसलिए आग को चुना गया।

यह सती से अलग है। सती में विधवा अपने पति की चिता पर बैठती थी। जौहर सामूहिक होता था और युद्ध के दौरान, जब पुरुष अभी जीवित या लड़ रहे होते थे।

आज यह प्रथा नहीं है, लेकिन राजपूत इतिहास और लोकगीतों में इसे साहस और बलिदान का प्रतीक माना जाता है।
