For years, people found old red-painted quarters in change jars and wondered what they were.

The answer turns out to be purely practical and very much of its time. In the arcade era of the 1980s and early 1990s, attendants kept a small supply of quarters deliberately painted red (often with nail polish). When a customer’s coin failed to register because of a jammed or temperamental slot, the attendant would drop in one of these marked coins to test the mechanism. If the game credited properly, the player got to continue; if not, the machine was taken offline for repair.

The red paint made the coins easy to spot and remove during the weekly cash count so they weren’t recorded as revenue. They were simply tools of the trade — “shills” or house coins — reused again and again.

It’s a small but telling detail of how arcades actually operated before tokens and electronic payment systems took over. Those painted quarters are now little artifacts of a physical, hands-on entertainment culture that has largely disappeared.
