The smallest progression is likely the best one.
Because it’s sustainable. If you hit a massive PR, it’s cool but often there’s a cost for a few sessions.
As I’ve matured as a lifter and coach, small progressions are more cool.
This summer marks my 19th year preparing college athletes for their competitive season. This week I took some time to reflect on that. Below are 19 lessons learned from 19 teams.

An absolute pleasure to have worked with @Joeingles7. An elite individual in all facets of life 🏀👨👩👧👧. No wonder why Joe has been smashing it for years and no doubt will continue to do so in Milwaukee and at the @Bucks !
Victorian Institute of Sport (@VicInstSport) staff members @stevehawkinspt (Manager, Physiotherapy & STT) & Nathan Lee (S&C Coach) have been assisting @Joeingles7 with his rehab whilst he's been in Melbourne. We wish Joe well on his return back to the court with the @Bucks!
Just the fact that a certain load maximizes power output doesn’t mean that load is “optimal”. I wish that doing an incremental load to determine Pmax were the holy grail, but it’s not! There is no such thing as one size fits all in performance.
Credit must go to the @the_ASCA and the Women's Advisory Group for initiating the second year of mentoring programs for female S&C coaches. It is an honour to be involved in trying to rectify the inequality!
Thread: To cue or not to cue? Is that the question?
I believe we owe it to the broader coaching community to consider the merit of what appears to be a growing tension between instructional (verbal) and constraint-led (non-verbal) approaches to coaching. 1/19
A foam roller, normaTec or theragun will never replace the power of high quality sleep, nutrition and hydration.
Recovery is a physiological process not a piece of equipment.
Looking forward to this one being published in @IJSPPjournal. Our first lab study looking at the time course of responses following high load and moderate load priming exercise 🏋🏽♂️ @DocLachJames Mike McGuigan, David Jenkins, Robert Schuster and @VinceKellySport
The boys starting their hip isometric progressions today. Intro was 4 x 10s holds- no load. We’ll get to loaded hip iso-switches and iso-catches in due course #isometrics
@LyndellBruce@Deakin_ExSc Which campus are you based at? I was just at Burwood last week to catch up with a few old peers! Would have been good to say hi to you!
