I vividly remember the first time we spoke he quickly cut me off after I addressed him as Dr. Bensmaia. "Never call me doctor again. It's Sliman." (There likely were some colorful words in there, too.) He wanted the science, not his credentials, to be at the forefront.
@slimanjbensmaia was a great collaborator, scientist, mentor, and friend. His enthusiasm for science, and life in general, was unmatched. We will miss him greatly. Our thoughts are with his family, friends, and colleagues.
“I think we as scientists embody something fundamentally, beautifully human … I still, idealistically and perhaps naively, believe in beauty because we, or some of us at least, experience it and are moved by it.” — Sliman Bensmaia, PhD, 1973-2023 https://t.co/aykDoe98Q6
Genuinely caring about students should be a non-negotiable qualification for a career in academia. Full stop.
No amount of research achievement or creativity can substitute for caring about the professional development and well-being of those we teach and mentor.
I stayed in school, I studied hard, I read my Bible, because we were Poor Financially, but we were rich spiritually! I am not bragging, nor am I boosting. I am just Praising GOD!
I enjoyed this review of the latest album from quite possibly my favorite active rock band, @kinggizzard, which encapsulates why I enjoy them so much: unbridled curiosity and creativity in their musical explorations.

“This 'shuddering before the beautiful', this incredible fact that a discovery motivated by a search after the beautiful in mathematics should find its exact replica in Nature, persuades me … that beauty is that to which the human mind responds at its deepest” (S Chandrasekhar)
We are excited to share that we have received the FDA’s approval to launch our first-in-human clinical study!
This is the result of incredible work by the Neuralink team in close collaboration with the FDA and represents an important first step that will one day allow our technology to help many people.
Recruitment is not yet open for our clinical trial. We’ll announce more information on this soon!
I fell prey to Parkinson's Law (i.e., work expands to fill the time allotted) again when I received an extension for an application and continued to revise and tweak until the minute it was due.
Is there any way to avoid this pervasive law?
Happy #Women's History Month! We're celebrating with a review paper on experiences of women in neural engineering (out now in @FrontNeurosci!) We examined major obstacles women and gender minorities face in neural engineering (NE) and suggested some ways to start addressing them.
I greatly enjoyed trying out the third thumb from @DaniClode this afternoon! It was also fascinating to learn about the research using the device from @plasticity_lab. Having tried it, I now feel I've been missing out by only having two thumbs all these years.
