Fifth, just don’t get me started on the diversity of the Magistracy. They can run all the expensive (!) recruitment campaigns they like - but no one is fixing this:
I agree with this- I think it’s a very worrying aspect of our justice system that lay magistrates have accumulated significantly increased sentencing powers in recent years.
Post by the Chair of the Criminal Cases Review Commission suggests that a 3-year prison sentence is a "small case" ..
Please tell me that's not what you meant? If so, I'm not sure it's appropriate for a Chair of the CCRC to hold such a flippant view of justice over someone's liberty.
Hello, there 👋
Have you heard David Lammy MP and Sarah Sackman MP talking about people stealing bottles of whisky and swiping mobile telephones as examples of people who should not get jury trials?
Well. I’d like to tell you a story.
🪡 🧵
Well, they did.
@UKLabour MPs placed unthinking tribalism ahead of evidence and principle.
They fell for the untruths and misdirections, the cynical emotive rhetoric and the lazy, cowardly refusal of the government to debate on the facts.
We deserve better politicians.
Justice needs Juries
If this legislation is passed don’t dare to be falsely accused , don’t dare to be innocent , don’t dare to be too poor to pay for your own defence .
Please listen to our members lobbying MPs today . #saveourjuries
Joanna is politer than I am going to be.
For the Justice Secretary - a former barrister - to suggest that being wrongly accused of a crime and imprisoned for three years is just like “scraping your knee”, should be a resignation matter.
@DavidLammy owes the public an apology.
Barristers, retired judges, solicitors and legal professionals - you still have time to sign our open letter to the Prime Minister so we can send a strong message to the government to ask them to rethink the approach to juries.
We’re planning to send the letter to the PM soon - you have until Sunday 1 March to add your signature.

@KarlTurnerMP@RobertBuckland We are all a little too quiet on the removal of the right to a de novo appeal from the lower courts.
If it happens every word needs recording, so too the advice being given by court advisors and no going into the retirement room with the magistrates.
Everything on the record.
Please remember that if the Lammy Leak is watered down to ‘only’ the Leveson Proposals then such a climbdown doesn’t make either version palatable, acceptable or a compromise.
David Lammy in opposition:
“Juries being replaced by judges and magistrates is effectively the establishment, rather than your peers who live in your community deciding what justice should be.”
He was right then. Completely wrong now.
This is an important point. A jury trial produces a verdict not only with legal force, but also with moral force. Quakers William Penn and William Mead, acquitted by a jury in 1670, would have been imprisoned by the judge (indeed, he imprisoned recalcitrant jurors). The jury trial is not only effective in discerning the guilt or innocence of persons, but in its egalitarian deliberation it allows robust disagreement and perverse verdicts. The ‘right’ outcome is not always what is right in law, and it is the right in law which binds the judge.
I simply do not understand how we have returned to a time when someone’s nationality or ‘race’ is considered to be a matter of public interest/relevance when it comes to the commission of a crime? It is sinister.
Interesting Fact of the Day: If Robert Jenrick were to catch 50 fare dodgers a day, recouping £2.90 each time for the taxpayer, it would take him well over 1,000 years to recoup the amount the taxpayer lost when he helped a major Tory donor avoid a £45m tax bill back in 2020.
