It’s so important that autism assessment is accessible before people reach crisis point.
We’re often experiencing significant difficulties by the time we realise that we may be autistic.
Delay in assessment, and lack of support in the interim, can have very serious consequences.
1/21 Autistic and Neurodivergent (ND) Overwhelm, a 🧵 - understanding what's involved, what you might see, timeframes and how to help and some personal learning on the way for me as an SLT @rcslctlearn @CPD_RCOT @asi_wise
I'm really not feeling the whole @RailwayMuseum thing, which is a pity as it used to be a favourite place.
SMG's focus on "wonderlabs" is killing distinctiveness of the specialist museums - the Workshop was my favourite part as a kid. Couldn't be less excited about Vision 2025.
I realized as a disabled person that there's no amount of proof that will prove to others that I'm disabled.
People will always seek out and believe whatever information that best reinforces their existing biases. Meaning that people will always want to believe that I'm faking.
I read a beautiful needlework that said something to the effect of …
“This is proof you don’t want to fuck with me.”
“As you can see I willing to spend hours stabbing something thousands of times just to make a point.”
This is high art 🤌
@Ben_L_Coulson Yeah my Latin experience was similar...
My first attempt with Google Translate was less successful than yours seems to have been! When I translated back and forth it got further away each time.
I think we need a family motto.
How do I find the Latin for "fuck around and find out"?
I guess I need to find a classics professor who swears like a (roman) sailor.
It's all very well @Keir_Starmer calling for Boris to go, but what about @SHinchcliffe? Or does accountability for gross failures of leadership only apply to the party you oppose?
@sbaroncohen Who needs to subgroup the autistic spectrum? Because autistic people don't seem to feel that need. Many do however see a benefit in subgrouping researchers into ones who listen to us and ones who hear only what they want to hear...
This. I'm surrounded by committee scientists and nearly became one myself because my brain naturally works this way. I'm floored that someone thought coming up with such an ugly word would help with research, rather than just utilizing the tools that have already solved this.
@GoldAgeLabUK@HappeLab@gavrobstew @simone_j_capp Many people also don't know how to use modifiers (not suggesting you don't, general observation). I typically use regular Google commercially rather than Scholar academically, but "speech marks", AND, etc make a huge difference to results.
@GoldAgeLabUK@HappeLab@gavrobstew @simone_j_capp Or no keyword at all. Perhaps we just need better search tools, or more skill in using them. Totally defer to your expertise in psych but mine in comp sci suggests this is a backwards approach. Imho, a linguistic solution to an information management problem.
Tl;Dr you are trying to solve a problem my discipline has already made strides to solve, and offending the people you wish to help in doing so. Rather than looking for the least offensive alternative term, perhaps your conclusions need to change... (8/8)
.@HappeLab I have to defer to your experience in psych research but as a computer scientist a good part of my expertise is in storing and finding information. So you're in my wheelhouse here... (1/8)
@KieranRose7@AutismAdulthood@gavrobstew @simone_j_capp #ActuallyAutistic community, what keyword be preferred, to refer to the study of autism in old age? Please tell us what is considered respectful and appropriate - it needs to be a novel single word that will not bring up irrelevant literature 9/11
The other strength in my field is logic. And logic says if we invent words for things all the time, it gets silly. Do we need a term for autistic computer scientists? Autistic ageing computer scientists? Autistic ageing computer scientists with side interests? (7/8)
